When Jared walked out of the Emperorfall Expanse, night had settled over the ice field.
The sky was deep purple.
Silver stars scattered across it like shattered diamonds, and cold moonlight washed the ice in a pale glow.
Nearly ten thousand demonic cultivators were still gathered outside.
Campfires flickered in the wind, lighting tired faces one after another.
Gwendolyn had been standing near the edge of the field, watching the rift without moving.
The moment Jared appeared, her icy-blue eyes brightened.
She hurried toward him, relief and worry breaking through her calm.
"Jared! You are back."
Jared looked at the concern in her eyes and the faint moisture gathering there.
Warmth moved through his chest.
He took her hand.
Their palms met, and warmth passed between them.
"I am back."
His voice carried exhaustion, but it was steady.
Gwendolyn held his hand tightly, as if afraid he might disappear again.
Her eyes moved over him, checking for injuries. Only after making sure he was safe did she breathe out.
"Did you find Josephine?"
Jared was silent for a moment.
A complicated light flashed through his violet eyes.
"I found her. But she left."
Gwendolyn's hand tightened slightly around his.
"At least she is safe."
Master Veridian wandered over with a dry blade of grass in his mouth.
He looked Jared up and down, and sharpness flashed in his cloudy eyes.
Then he grinned.
"Golden Immortal Level Two. Not bad at all. I knew the Emperorfall Expanse would not kill you. It even gave you a promotion."
Caiden hurried over. His injuries had improved considerably. The bandage across his chest had been changed, and although his face was still pale, light had returned to his eyes. When he felt how much stronger Jared's aura had become, surprise lit his face. "Mr. Chance, you broke through to Golden Immortal Level Two?"
"Yeah." Jared nodded. "I found some law-resonance essence left behind by an Immortal Emperor. I got lucky."
Caiden smiled with genuine relief. "That's excellent. The stronger you become, Mr. Chance, the safer the rest of us are."
Jared nodded and was about to answer.
Then his brows tightened.
His spirit sense had caught something.
Far across the horizon, countless auras were rushing toward them.
Dense.
Chaotic.
Numerous enough to make even Jared's gaze grow solemn.
"Someone is coming."
His voice lowered. "A lot of them."
Caiden's expression changed.
He immediately released his own spirit sense.
A moment later, his face turned ugly.
"At least tens of thousands. Human cultivators and beast clan cultivators. They are coming straight for us."
Those words struck the demonic cultivators like thunder.
Nearly ten thousand people stood at once.
Some gripped their arcane implements.
Some formed defensive lines.
Some showed fear and despair before the enemy had even arrived.
"They found us."
