The thin man was the fastest.
He had already fled more than a hundred miles.
But Jared's figure flashed three times in succession, crossing space like a phantom, and appeared directly in front of him.
Terror twisted the thin man's face.
He lifted the black banner in panic.
The strange runes across the banner flared wildly and released a dark barrier.
It did not matter.
Chaotic force was not something he could stop.
Violet sword-light tore through the black barrier and struck him, splitting his body in half.
In less than ten breaths, all six fugitives lay in pools of blood.
Silence returned to the floating island.
Only the wind moving over the rocks and the smell of blood drifting through the void remained.
Jared stood among the corpses.
A few drops of blood had landed on his gray robe, but chaotic force quickly burned them away.
He sheathed the Dragonslayer Sword.
His black eyes showed no emotion, as if everything that had just happened were no more than brushing away fallen leaves.
Then he began collecting the Storage Pouches and Storage Rings from the bodies.
All seven cultivators were at least Golden Immortal Level Six. Their resources were not extraordinary, but they were better than nothing.
Tens of thousands of high-grade crystals.
Some ordinary pills and arcane implements.
A few jade slips containing scattered cultivation methods.
And one jade slip carved with a partial map of the Emperorfall Expanse. Several possible resource locations had been marked on it.
Jared put away the spoils and memorized the information in the map jade slip.
Then he continued deeper into the Emperorfall Expanse.
The farther he went, the stranger the environment became.
Dangers appeared more often.
In the gray void, bizarre phenomena emerged one after another.
Some places held enormous whirlpools turning slowly in the air. Terrifying spatial force churned inside them, as if ready to drag anything in and grind it to dust.
Some places held frozen fragments of time. Still images hung motionless in the air like scenes sealed behind glass, preserving moments from an ancient age.
Other places showed huge law sigils forming in the void without warning. Each one released pressure that made the heart tremble.
That pressure was beyond what Golden Immortal cultivators could understand.
It was the lingering law resonance of an Immortal Emperor.
Even a trace of it could shatter the mind of a Golden Immortal Level Eight expert.
Jared moved carefully through those dangers.
With chaotic force, all laws returned to the same source. He used that unique advantage to avoid every fatal trap.
All the while, his spirit sense searched for Josephine's aura.
He found nothing.
It was as if an invisible membrane covered the void and blocked his sense of her.
But he did find something else.
In a stretch of void surrounded by several Immortal Emperor law sigils, Jared saw a giant floating rock.
The rock was dark gold from end to end. Ancient runes covered its surface, moving slowly like living things and releasing a pale golden glow.
Around the rock, spiritual energy was so dense it almost seemed solid.
Each breath felt like a spring of spiritual power pouring into his body.
Jared flew closer and sent his spirit sense inside.
The rock contained a large quantity of law fragments.
Law-resonance essence left behind after the Immortal Emperor's fall.
One of the most valuable cultivation resources in this void.
That essence contained the Immortal Emperor's understanding of the laws of heaven and earth. Any cultivator who absorbed even a portion of it would gain an enormous boost.
Jared did not hesitate.
He sat cross-legged on the giant rock.
Chaotic force roared through his body as he began devouring the law-resonance essence.
Pale golden light poured from the rock like streams of sunlight. It flowed into Jared's body without end.
Chaotic force greedily swallowed the essence, converted it into nourishment, strengthened his meridians, tempered his elixir field, and widened his spirit sense.
His cultivation began rising at an astonishing speed.
