"Everyone enters through the gate in order."
Jared's voice spread across the square. "Do not shove. Do not panic. Go one by one."
Garrick stood at the front of the crowd and raised his voice. "You heard Mr. Chance. Enter the light gate now."
The disciples of Inferno Devil Ridge were still confused, but Garrick had already made the decision. After a brief hesitation, the first group stepped toward the gray light.
The gate swallowed them.
Light flashed.
Their figures vanished from the square and reappeared on the ice field outside the Emperorfall Expanse.
More disciples followed.
One group.
Then another.
Wave after wave of people disappeared into the gate.
Master Veridian watched beside Jared, his eyes full of amazement.
"Mr. Chance, this tower of yours is no ordinary treasure. I have lived this long, and I have never seen an artifact that can move thousands of people through space like this."
"The Demon-Quelling Tower has strong space-time force, but every transfer consumes chaotic force."
Jared's voice had already grown heavier with fatigue. "I can still hold for now, but not forever. When we go to Shadowfell City for Caiden and his people, I may need you to pour spiritual power into the tower."
Master Veridian slapped his chest.
"That is easy. I may not have much else, but spiritual power? I have plenty."
When the last people from Inferno Devil Ridge stepped into the light gate, Jared put the tower away and looked toward the hunters gathering outside the mountain.
Those hunters had seen the protective array vanish.
They had also seen the enormous light gate open in the square.
For a short moment, they only stared at one another, unsure what had happened.
Then someone shouted.
"They are escaping!"
"Stop them!"
"Do not let those demon bastards run!"
The hunters surged forward like mad.
But Jared had already activated the Demon-Quelling Tower again.
Gwendolyn, Master Veridian, and the young acolyte stood close to him. Gray light rose around them and swallowed their figures.
By the time the hunters rushed into the square, there was nothing left.
Only an empty plaza.
Only cold wind.
The hunters stood there, stunned and furious.
...
Shadowfell City was in even worse condition.
More than a hundred hunters had surrounded the walls. Some cursed from below. Some kept attacking the barrier. Some were setting up siege artifacts, preparing to break through in one blow.
The city walls were covered with cracks and scorch marks.
On top of the wall, Caiden Morgrave stood with a pale face. Bloodstained bandages were wrapped around his chest.
The demonic cultivators around him looked exhausted. Many were injured. Despair hung over the city like a dark cloud.
"City Lord!" someone shouted. "The western array is broken. The hunters are gathering there. They are about to force their way in."
Caiden clenched his jaw.
"Everyone who can still fight goes to the western wall. We hold that breach no matter what."
"Yes!"
Before the messenger could leave, gray light suddenly fell from the sky.
It struck the top of the wall with a heavy boom.
When the light dispersed, Jared, Gwendolyn, Master Veridian, and the young acolyte appeared.
Caiden froze.
Then surprise and relief rushed into his eyes.
"Mr. Chance? Why are you back?"
Jared looked at Caiden's wounds, then at the hunters massed below the city.
Cold light flashed in his violet eyes.
"I came to get you out. Lord Morgrave, gather everyone in the city who can still move. I will take you away."
"Take us where?"
"To the entrance of the Emperorfall Expanse," Jared said. "The hunters will not dare chase you in there."
Caiden's expression shifted.
A thousand questions flashed through his eyes.
But he did not waste time asking them.
"All right. I trust you."
He turned toward the city and shouted, "Everyone withdraw to the central square. Now."
The demonic cultivators did not understand what was happening, but Caiden's order was absolute. They moved at once.
