Jared?
Impossible.
Jared's body had already been shattered by the two Grand Elders working together, and the spirit had been sealed inside the Soul-Vault Pearl and carried away to the Seventeenth Firmament.
How could he have returned to the Sixteenth Firmament now, with his body whole and untouched?
But if that was not Jared, then who was it?
In the Sixteenth Firmament, who would dare fly straight toward the Celestial Alliance great hall in the open like that?
And worse, it was the violet streak of light. That color was Jared's signature.
Alaric shot to his feet, his golden robe stirring though there was no wind. "Send the order! All forces on guard! Activate all the wards! Awaken the final form of the Mountain-Guarding Grand Array at once!"
His command came out nearly as a roar. "No matter who is coming, anyone who trespasses into the Celestial Alliance great hall dies on sight!"
"Yes!"
The war horn's call rang through the great hall, deep and urgent, pressing down with a weight that pulled every celestial cultivator's nerves tight.
The order tore through the whole High Hall at the highest speed possible.
Upon the mustering square, the three thousand celestial elites formed ranks in a rush. Golden saintlight flared from every cultivator, washing the whole mustering square in brilliant gold.
The wards activated one layer after another. Not nine layers—twelve.
This was the ultimate defensive state of the Celestial Alliance great hall. The twelvefold Saintlight ward stacked layer upon layer, and every layer was built from hundreds of sigils, strong enough to withstand a full-force strike from a Level One Golden Immortal adept.
The radiant barrier grew thicker with every layer. The golden radiance deepened, and the sigils flashed wildly, sealing the entire great hall inside until not a gap remained.
This twelvefold warding was the foundation the Celestial Alliance had accumulated over tens of thousands of years. Since the hall had been built, it had never been fully opened, because no enemy had ever forced them to use all of it.
Today was different.
Because the one coming was Jared.
Alaric stood before the black throne, staring at the sky outside the High Hall. His heartbeat hammered so fast it seemed ready to burst from his chest, but he locked every crack in himself down and gave the hall nothing to see.
He was the High Sovereign of the Celestial Alliance, the ruler of the Sixteenth Firmament. He could not lose his footing here.
The air inside the hall pressed lower and lower. At last, an elder could not hold back. "High Sovereign, perhaps this is only some wandering cultivator's prank. Perhaps the scout saw wrong. Jared's body has already been—"
"Shut up."
Alaric cut him off.
His voice carried the bite of ice.
Because violet radiance had already appeared at the far edge of the sky.
That was not a beam of light. It was a meteor, a meteor diving straight down.
It dragged a long violet tail flame behind it, blasting every cloud in its path to pieces.
The tail flame stretched one hundred yards, carving a straight violet track across the sky that refused to fade.
Its speed had gone beyond anything the eye could make sense of. One breath earlier, it had still been one hundred miles away; the next, it had already closed to within ten miles.
The whole High Hall of the Celestial Alliance began to tremble.
It was not an earthquake. The pressure brought by that streak of light was simply too great.
All twelve layers of wards gave off a piercing hum at once. The sigils across the radiant barrier flashed madly, as if they had sensed a threat meant to destroy them.
The celestial cultivators on the square began to shake despite themselves. The arms in their hands clattered and rang.
"They had been trained to move like one body, to hold formation under any disaster.
But under that kind of pressure, thousands of years of training turned into a joke."
The violet radiance came down with brutal precision, striking the square directly before the High Hall.
When the light scattered, a solitary figure stood inside the ring formed by the three thousand celestial elites.
"He wore a cyan robe, so clean it looked untouched by dust.
A longsword hung at his waist. Its scabbard was plain and old, while a faint violet sheen moved along the blade."
He stood on the jade-paved ground of the square, straight-backed and unmoving, like a mountain planted there.
His face was cold and severe, carrying a composure that did not belong to ordinary flesh and blood.
But the thing that seized the eye hardest was his gaze.
A pair of violet eyes.
"That violet was no ordinary color.
It was the color of chaos, the color the world might have worn when heaven and earth first split open."
Violet light flowed through his pupils, like two bottomless violet abysses staring out from his face.
