Lycan Erasmus said, “This morning, the Ministry of Justice reported a staffing shortage. You can transfer some personnel from the Capital Guard to assist them. Given the gravity of this treason case, don’t let any suspicious persons slip through the net—even you might detain the wrong individuals. Anyone with the slightest suspicion is to be hauled to the Ministry for interrogation. This includes family members of officials who were closely associated with Madison. Should any certified nobility be involved, you’ll personally oversee their questioning.”

“Yes, Lycan Erasmus,” Adelaide dutifully acknowledged the order.

“The Royal Guard and my personal werewolf guard are also under your command. As for the Royal Patrol and Capital Guard, I trust you can manage them, especially since Ellen is already under your authority. However, Captain Ampelio of the Royal Guard and Anilo of the Royal Patrol may not be so compliant. While they were nominally part of the Ironthorn Army, they’ve operated independently without true integration. Gaining their genuine respect will be no easy task–do not disappoint me.

She was well aware that high–ranking werewolves in the Ironthorn Army were never easy to

manage.

The army was composed of exceptionally talented individuals, each with their own distinct personalities.

Even Ellen had initially defied her until a test of strength brought him to heel.

Lycan Erasmus continued, “I’m also informing you of another matter. The former deputy captain of the Lycan King’s personal werewolf guard is being reassigned. I intend to promote Ulrik to this position. Do you have any objections?”

Adelaide was taken aback. Ulrik, originally from the Capital Guard, was being leapfrogged several ranks to become the deputy captain of the Lycan King’s personal guard.

Given that there were others who had contributed significantly to the Madison case, his promotion alone raised eyebrows.

Moreover, with Adelaide having just assumed her new role, this move risked being seen as her favoring Ulrik, her former mate, now that she was mated to Lance.

She inwardly sighed–this was quite a dilemma to face so soon after taking office.

If her bond with Lance were not solid and based on trust, this could well be the first strain on their relationship.

But Adelaide did not object.

She recognized that Lycan Erasmus was not genuinely seeking her input. His words were effectively a command.

By promoting Ulrik—a figure with past conflicts with Blackthorn–he was deliberately creating a situation to discomfort both Adelaide and Lance.

Perhaps Erasmus believed that such a mutually restraining dynamic would provide him with a sense of security.

After Adelaide left the study, Fabian watched her retreating figure with concern.

He too was uncertain whether Adelaide and Lance could weather this and the many trust trials.

Lycan Erasmus could have directly appointed Ulrik without involving Adelaide. Even if he insisted on involving her in the transfer process, a simple notification would have sufficed.

Instead, he chose to exert control over the situation in this roundabout manner, leaving all parties involved–Adelaide, Lance, and even Ulrik–feeling uneasy.

Upon leaving the palace, Adelaide proceeded directly to the Capital Guard headquarters.

As today marked her official assumption of duty, Ellen and Anilo, the captain of the Royal Patrol, along with their subordinates, were waiting at the entrance. They had prepared coffee and pastries, laid out on a long table in the hall.

Thus, she was not perturbed by Ampelio’s absence at the welcoming ceremony.
