Adelaide said to Caldwell, “Caldwell, I’ve asked Paisley to bring Poly over. Once you two meet, take her home to your folks.”

Caldwell’s eyes welled up–this day had finally come.

When Paisley woke up, she heard the news—Adelaide was set to join the royal court and officially become the Ironthorn Legion commander, overseeing the Capital Guard, Royal Patrol, and palace security.

She felt like she was dreaming and kept exclaiming, “Ah?” until she rubbed her eyes and asked, “Really going to be one of those officials everyone dislikes?”

Adelaide chuckled, “Why ‘disliked‘? Can’t you be an official who does good for the people?”

Paisley propped herself up on her elbow, circled Adelaide with a finger, and said, “Alright, you’ll make a great official for the people.”

Adelaide recalled their days wandering together.

They used to disdain local officials, especially the corrupt ones, mockingly calling them “disliked officials.”

Yet they also admired the honest ones who truly cared for their people.

Those who truly care for the people have always commanded her admiration.

Unfortunately, their adventurous endeavors were short–lived, as they were soon captured and returned. As a consequence, she was imprisoned by Klein for a fortnight.

Thinking of the Shadow Peaks, Adelaide’s smile brightened.

“You’re beaming,” Paisley said, her eyes suddenly glistening–it had been so long since she’d seen Adelaide smile so carefree.

Adelaide explained, “Not happy about being an official, but about shedding those rigid expectations for she–wolves. I can step out, gain more freedom, and do so much more.”

Paisley nodded. “True. Remember how you restrained your laughter around those noblewomen? It pained me to see you so constrained.”

“But why does Lycan Erasmus suddenly want you as an official?” Paisley wondered. “Your popularity was highest after your return with battle honors. That was the time for an official post. Now, with so much opposition likely–most don’t want women in governance.”

Adelaide replied, “That’s for Lycan Erasmus to handle. As for why he wants me now, I won’t speculate. Only by stepping into the spotlight can I show him the Blackthorn Pack isn’t worth such suspicion.”

Caldwell, planning to urge Paisley to fetch Poly, overheard and was struck by Adelaide’s exceptional vision.

“I’ve sent for him. You should fetch Poly first,” Caldwell urged, sweating with anxiety.

Paisley agreed and dashed out like the wind.

Caldwell had bought a townhouse and hired servants to care for his parents.

His father was aging and in poor health; his mother, distraught over her youngest daughter’s disappearance, had also fallen ill.

Doctor Digby had been helping them recover over the past two years.

This morning, a servant returning from shopping reported the city’s unrest to Skemon,

Caldwell’s father.
