Chapter 562
Chapter 562
Third Person’s POV
Lycan Erasmus figured the Blackthorn Pack had some inside info, Once Adelaide started the investigation, she’d use that info to make progress.
Basically, Lycan Erasmus wanted to use the Blackthorn Pack but didn’t trust Lance, hence this plan.
Hopefully, after they root out the rebels, Lycan Erasmus won’t turn on them.
After leaving the palace, Lance headed back to the Blackthorn Pack and briefed Caldwell, who was just settling in. Lance told him Lycan Erasmus wanted Adelaide to take over the Ironthorn Legion.
Caldwell’s drowsiness vanished.
He’d planned to ask Adelaide to help him see his sister once she woke up.
But now, with Lycan Erasmus’s sudden move, he had to rack his brain to figure out the motive.
Sleep was out of the question.
When Adelaide got up, dressed, and came out, Caldwell immediately reported, “Alpha Lance came back earlier. He said Lycan Erasmus is promoting you to Ironthorn Legion commander, giving you control over the Capital Guard, Royal Patrol, Lycan King’s personal wolf guard, and the patrol teams. I’m still trying to unpack why Lycan Erasmus is doing this.”
Adelaide was skeptical. “Is this a real position of power?”
“Yes, it’s a real role,” Caldwell confirmed.
Adelaide was stunned. “Our kingdom’s never had a she–wolf in an official royal position. Even when Velda earned her battle honors, she was just placed in the guard. And my deputy commander title was purely honorary–just for the salary.”
She–wolves could fight in wars, but being a royal official was different.
Now, Adelaide was to command not only the Ironthorn Legion but also the Capital Guard, Royal Patrol, and the royal wolf guard. The power was enormous.
Caldwell said, “I don’t know why Lycan Erasmus is doing this, but the official appointment will likely come after the royal meeting. Also, Alpha Lance said Lycan Erasmus wants you to

discuss this at the palace.”
Adelaide found it odd but would accept the role if the appointment came through.

She mused that she–wolves held little status in the royal family, which Clarissa often lamented.
When Velda became a she–wolf general, Clarissa had praised her joyfully.
Adelaide told Caldwell, “Lance’s compromises and patience haven’t gone unnoticed by Lycan Erasmus. But Lycan Erasmus also knows Lance’s loyalty doesn’t require such sacrifices.”
Caldwell sighed. “Lycan Erasmus is distrustful by nature. Alpha Lance backs down to preserve royal unity. Lycan Erasmus wants to use Lance but fears him, leading to this conflicting situation. It all boils down to a lack of trust.”
Adelaide added, “Our continual concessions only provide temporary reassurance to Lycan Erasmus. They don’t resolve the core issue. Since that’s the case, I believe we should proceed with what needs to be done. Suspicions and fears can’t be avoided.”
Caldwell’s eyes lit up. “You feel the same way, Luna Adelaide?”
“Hasn’t Lance mentioned similar thoughts to you before?” Adelaide asked.
“Alpha Lance once told me the same. He said with only Cedric to inherit the Frostfang Pack, it’s crucial to protect him. So sometimes, it’s better to avoid trouble. And…”
Caldwell hesitated but then continued, “Alpha Lance also worries you don’t want to get entangled in the royal family’s suspicions. He hopes you can live peacefully. He thinks you’ve been through too much and deserves a calm life.”
Adelaide was touched.
She hadn’t realized Lance’s considerations included her and Cedric. She always thought he only wanted to maintain brotherly ties with Lycan Erasmus or avoid arousing his suspicions.
Warmth welled up inside her–this was the feeling of being truly valued.
Previously, she thought the Blackthorn Pack seemed “cowardly,” always second–guessing Lycan Erasmus’s suspicions before acting.
Moreover, as Luna Adelaide, she had to mind her every word and deed to match her status, gradually forgetting her true self.
When she said she felt like her past was a distant memory, wasn’t the time in the Shadow Peaks the same?

That free–spirited Adelaide from the Shadow Peaks, riding in vibrant clothes and living unrestrained–it was as if she had “died” in the past.
Rather than living cautiously, she might as well act boldly.
Life’s too short to be anything but true to oneself.
