Ryan pretended not to notice the coldness Clara emitted and pressed on, "I heard from the principal that you're from Phoypolis. Your brother came all this way to see you, which shows how much he cares. How could he bear to let you work in such a rural school?"
Clara frowned, not wanting to entertain him. She grabbed a textbook from the desk and made a quick excuse. "Mr. Chase, class is about to start. I'll head over first."
Before he could say anything more, she hurriedly left the office.
Ryan's expression darkened as he watched her retreating figure, irritation flashing in his eyes.
Clara, already a distance away, didn't notice it.
…
Martha had settled into Crownview Villa, prompting Carlisle to leave for work early to steer clear of her in the mornings.
When his secretary arrived, he immediately ordered her to call Liam.
Upon receiving the message, Liam quickly contacted Wren, but after waiting several minutes without a reply, he reluctantly made his way to Carlisle's office.
After knocking and receiving permission, Liam entered. "Mr. Zachman, you wanted to see me?"
Carlisle, seated behind his desk, was absorbed in reviewing documents. He didn't look up, nor did he speak.
The office was so silent that it felt suffocating, and the pressure in the air was palpable. Liam felt a cold sweat break out as he stood there, his nerves on edge.
Carlisle didn't acknowledge him for more than ten minutes. Just as Liam thought he might snap, Carlisle finally set the document down.
His sharp, commanding gaze fixed on Liam. "You know why I called you in. You've always handled Wren's schedule. So, tell me. Where is he now?"
His acting wasn't perfect, but at least he didn't show any signs of guilt.
Carlisle stared at him, unable to find any obvious clues. After probing a bit more, Liam skillfully dodged each question with false innocence. Frustrated, Carlisle finally dismissed him.
As soon as he stepped out of the office, Liam let out a long sigh of relief and hurried back to his workstation.
He immediately checked his phone back at his desk. Seeing Wren's reply, he carefully recounted the conversation that had just occurred.
Finally, summoning his courage, he said, "Mr. Zachman, if you don't return soon, Mr. Carlisle might send someone to investigate your whereabouts. It'll be impossible to hide your trip to Larkston to see Ms. Salford.
"When are you coming back? I'll book tickets for you and Ms. Salford."
Liam's hands still trembled after sending the message. He feared Wren might refuse to return. He knew he couldn't withstand Carlisle's relentless questioning if that happened.
