Three hours later, the light outside the operating room turned off, and a doctor came out looking somber. "Is there a family member here?" he asked.
Esther felt worried when she saw his face. Before Agnes could say anything, Esther quickly said, "I am." Then she realized her mistake and stepped back.
Agnes took a deep breath and stepped forward. "I'm his mother. How is he?"
"He's stable for now, but I suggest transferring him to another hospital. We can't delay his treatment any longer."
Agnes almost fainted. This was the best hospital in Enswood. If they needed to move him, it meant going abroad, but he was too sick for that.
Agnes felt so helpless she almost cried. Esther went to Pearl for help.
"Can you help me save him?"
Pearl comforted her. "Don't worry. I promised I'd help."
Esther nodded and dried her tears.
When James was moved to a regular room, everyone went to see him.
Adrian looked at James, who was still and thought Pearl was worrying too much. "He just had surgery, so I don't think he'll wake up anytime soon."
"Just to be safe, hold him still."
While Adrian held James carefully, Pearl gave James several jabs of medication in different parts of his body, which seemed to calm him. She did this a few times.
James didn't move at all during the treatment, and just as Adrian was about to say there was no need to worry, an unfamiliar voice said, "Thank you."
