Your Guise Is Slipping, Miss Pearl (Pearl and Richard) novel Chapter 1318

Agnes knew Esther would find out about the truth sooner or later. Reluctantly, she let Esther into the hospital room.

Esther dressed in sterile clothes and gently opened the door to enter. She saw James lying weakly in bed, and tears welled up in her eyes.

"James, I'm here to see you."

The patient monitor next to James beeped faster when he saw Esther. Esther noticed but kept her head down, realizing he didn't want to see her.

"I'm sorry. I know you don't want to see me now, but I really needed to. I need to know about your illness."

James was weak but didn't need oxygen yet.

"What are you doing here? Didn't I tell you it's over between us? Don't come back."

Esther felt hurt by his words even though she knew he was ill. "I told you, I needed to see if you were okay."

"Esther, I've told you, we're done."

"Yes, I know. But can't we be friends? Aunt Agnes and I are close. Can't I visit her?"

"If you're here to see my mom, why come to my room?"

Esther replied, "I just told her she's like my sister. Can't I check on my godson?"

But Esther also knew James well. She understood that he was being cruel to push her away, not wanting her to suffer when he was gone.

She was aware of what James was thinking. So, she sat down next to his bed. "I'm sorry. You can't really stop me from staying. I won't leave today."

"How could you!"

Angry, James struggled to breathe.

Esther worried her presence might make his condition worse. But seeing him stable, she sighed in relief.
