She stepped into the study, grabbed a file from the safe, slipped it into her bag, and got ready to head out.

As soon as she reached the bottom of the stairs, Sara dashed over, looking up at her with big eyes, all excitement and hope. “Aunt Patricia, can I come with you?”

“It’s just so boring being stuck at home,” Sara sighed.

Ever since Patricia found out she was pregnant, Sara’s main job had been to keep her company. This was all because of Oliver. He cared too much about Patricia, and he knew it. People always say caring too much just makes things more complicated. To keep Patricia from feeling smothered, he put his energy into work and tried to keep his distance.

Still, he didn’t want Patricia left alone, so he asked Sara to stay with her. Patricia understood what was really going on, but she didn’t say anything. Sometimes, you have to compromise if you want things to stay peaceful. If she started pushing back, her life with Oliver would only get messier.

But today, Patricia had business to settle with Ruby, and it wasn’t the kind of thing Sara should be involved in.

“Maybe next time. Today isn’t the best day,” Patricia said gently.

Sara blinked, giving her best puppy-dog eyes, hoping to win her over with cuteness.

Patricia just smiled and patted her head. “I really have something important to handle.”

Sara pouted but nodded. “Okay. But call me if you need anything, Aunt Patricia. Otherwise, I’ll have a hard time explaining to Uncle Oliver.”

Patricia laughed. “I promise.”

Later that day, Aiden drove to the office to pick up Jackson before they headed to Ruby’s place.

Ruby lived in a high-rise with strict security. At first, the guards wouldn’t let them in, but Jackson was persuasive. A few packs of cigarettes and some smooth talking did the trick every time.

He hopped back in the car, flashed a grin at Aiden, and signaled for him to drive on in.

While Aiden turned the wheel, he said, “I read something the other day that made me think of you.”

Jackson raised an eyebrow. “What was it?”

“Jack of all trades.”
