The night was peaceful.

Jaxon got up early the next morning. He was here in Riverdale for business, plain and simple. Selara, though, had come for a different reason. She wanted to see the infamous Oliver, who had always been so cold and unfeeling, finally get a taste of his own medicine. The idea of Patricia hiding her pregnancy from him made Selara almost giddy. After all the times Oliver had enjoyed watching her struggle, it felt good to be the one with the front row seat to his drama.

The woods around Cloud Peak were still lush and green. Their grandfather had put a lot of effort into the gardens years ago, determined to make the estate feel like spring all year. Even though Riverdale had its seasons, Cloud Peak’s trees and plants stayed vibrant. Only heavy frost or snow could dull their color.

Selara came back from her walk, the cold clinging to her coat. She paused in the living room, hugging herself for warmth, just as Oliver came downstairs in gray loungewear.

“By yourself? Where’s Pattie?”

“She’s still asleep. I just wanted some water.”

“So… you two good now?”

Oliver didn’t say anything. He was already tired of the question.

Selara smirked. “No answer? That’s a no, right? She just gave you a way to save face, didn’t she?”

Still nothing from Oliver.

Selara kept going. “You know, your wife isn’t exactly broke. She can handle raising a kid on her own. Are you about to become one of those guys getting left out of the picture? All those rich girls in Golden Bay have been bragging about it. They say men are useless, just good for getting pregnant, then it’s time to kick them out. You don’t think Pattie’s thinking like that, do you?”
