Chapter 25
RALI
I stood up, raking my fingers into my hair like I could claw the confusion out of my skull.
Veronica rose with me while Ruby was still on the phone with the officer. “Rali-”

“No, it’s not right,” I bit out. “I was there, Nica. I watched him kill them. He… He, I paused, closing my eyes as the emotions threatened to crush me. “He killed Adam right in front of me. Cut him open like he was some animal.”
The air in the room suddenly felt too heavy, like it was pressing down on my chest.
“He killed them. I watched it.”
“We believe you.” Veronica stepped in front of me and grabbed my hands. “Even Meredith believes you. It’s obvious he had the scene cleared out before they arrived.”
But how could it have been done so perfectly without leaving a trace?
Ruby ended her call and stood to join us. “She said they’ll keep looking and-”
“He couldn’t have had enough time,” I muttered. “Cleaning Adam’s house that thoroughly would’ve taken hours and probably help. There’s no way he did it alone and still had time to take me wherever he did.”
“Someone must’ve helped him,” Veronica agreed with a nod.
Fresh dread washed over me. So, he wasn’t working alone. He had people willing to get their hands dirty for him. How doomed could I be?
I slid my gaze between Veronica and Ruby, then whispered, “I’m scared.”
Ruby grabbed my shoulder. “Hey, there’s no need for that. I completely trust Meredith. If she says she’ll get this asshole, she
will.”
I released a shaky breath, willing the threatening tears to go back in. I wish I could believe Ruby’s words, but a part of me knew they weren’t true.
**********
By Monday, I was feeling much better. My leg only hurt when touched, and my… ass didn’t hurt anymore.
I was well enough to go to work.
But if there was one thing that clung to me through the weekend, it was the fear.
My last two nightmares had been filled with images of him murdering Adam and his guards in cold blood, torturing me in that dark room while I was defenseless, and then eventually forcing himself on me,
Those were the only dreams I’ve been having, and each morning, I woke up with my head pounding like it had taken a blow.
It didn’t help that he was still out there and could do worse to me at any moment. Not to mention I only had five days left from the stupid deadline.
Some of my colleagues noticed and asked about my strange mood. The normal me would’ve been laughing at their jokes and cracking some myself. But how could I do that when there was a murderer on my trail? A murderer that’s been

effortlessly slipping the police’s fingers? It made me even more terrified of him.

Why did daddy ever bring him home sixteen years ago? That little boy was totally different from the man that had abducted me three nights ago.
“Please, don’t tell me your mood somehow has something to do with my recent rise in glory,” Evie appeared at my desk, holding a stack of files.
I’d been working on a design on my system and didn’t bother a look at her.
She tapped my system when I remained quiet. “Hey, I’m trying to be concerned here. Concerned about me, of course. I wouldn’t feel safe working with someone who’s envious enough to want me dead.”
“If you’d just let me be, Evie,” my voice came out in a sigh.
She huffed. “I understand, anyway. It must sulk watching someone take what you wanted.”
I finally looked at her. “You really think you’re important enough to get me worked up? Are you that starved of attention?”
“I believe I am just as important, honey. And if I were you, I’d get ready for more because I’m not done with you.”
My phone chimed with a new text. Just the right time.
I shut my laptop and slipped my phone into my bag as I began to gather my things.
“Seriously,” I swung the strap over my shoulder. “what’s your problem with me? The sooner you realize I’m just here to work, not compete with you, the better for you. There’s too much grudge stored in that tiny chest of yours. I’m surprised you’re not bursting at the seams.”
I walked around the desk, but just as I passed her, her fingers clamped onto my wrist.
A few of the colleagues in the room expressed their shock.
“Evie!” Bryan called hoarsely from his desk.
“Stop pretending you’re the innocent one all the time,” Evie spat. “You might fool everyone else, but not me.”
What the hell….
I yanked my wrist free, glaring so hard at her.
She scoffed and left, leaving me to my confused thoughts.
What in God’s name was she talking about? Why was she always sounding like she held a deep grudge against me? I have never met that lady before Fable and Fabric.
Having better things to worry about, I left the company, going down the block to the cafe where Veronica and Ruby were waiting for me.
