"It's Sylvia..."
Francis pushed the grim reality of Caroline's situation to the back of his mind and focused on the good news. "She finally agreed to let us be together."
"..."
Rebecca was stunned, hardly daring to believe it. "That's... wow."
In the past, the old lady had been fiercely opposed to them.
Later, even though they had quietly gotten back together.
Francis had never brought up his grandmother's stance again.
She didn't have to ask to know that Sylvia hadn't given her blessing, otherwise, Francis wouldn't have kept quiet about it.
And now, completely out of the blue, she was agreeing to it?
"What's wrong?"
When she didn't say anything, Francis let out a low chuckle. "Are you too shocked to speak?"
"No, it's not that..."
Rebecca shook her head in a daze. Her sheer shock far outweighed her excitement. "She actually agreed? Why the sudden change of heart?"
"Because of Sherilyn."
Francis didn't try to take any of the credit. "Grandmother asked Sherilyn over for a chat. I don't know the exact details, but I'm certain Sherilyn was the one who talked her into it."
So that was it.
Realization dawned on Rebecca.
Sylvia had always been fond of Sherilyn. If she hadn't been, she wouldn't have offered such a massive dowry in the first place.
It made perfect sense that Sherilyn would be the one to sway her.
"Rebecca?"
Francis's voice was soft as he asked, "Tell me, are you happy?"
"..." Rebecca was struck speechless, still trying to process the information. Was she happy?
"What is it?"
Met with nothing but silence, Francis narrowed his eyes slightly. "Are you unhappy? Do you not want to be with me?"
"No, no."
Rebecca quickly denied it. "That's not what I meant."
"Then what did you mean?" Francis pressed, refusing to let her off the hook. "Tell me. I want you to say it clearly."
"I..."
Rebecca bit her lower lip, hesitating before finally admitting, "I am happy. Really, I'm very happy."
He finally heard the answer he was looking for.
Francis's lips curled into a gentle smile. "I knew you would be."
She then turned to the housekeeper.
"Please bring them some juice and snacks, but don't give them too much sugar."
"Right away."
Once the kids were settled, Sherilyn led Rebecca into the living room to sit down.
"I didn't plan on us going anywhere today. We can just stay in, enjoy the quiet, and catch up."
She had been exhausted from running around the past few days.
"Sounds perfect to me," Rebecca agreed. "It's too hot to be outside anyway. It wouldn't be any fun."
"What's going on with you?"
Sherilyn studied her friend's face. She didn't exactly look sad, but she seemed a little distant and muted.
"Did something happen?"
She didn't dare bring up Caroline, afraid that Rebecca might still be out of the loop.
"Is it that obvious?"
Rebecca grabbed a throw pillow, hugging it against her chest as she let out a sigh. "Well... it looks like I'm getting married."
"?"
So that was it.
