Chapter 40
“Daddy, please don’t hit mommy. Please.”
“Daddy!”
“Mommy, it’s my birthday today. Dad gave me a gift.”
As a child, Anastasia longed for a loving home with warmth.
But Zeke was addicted to alcohol, gambling and domestic violence.
Everyone went crazy during the period when Anastasia’s mom found out that she had been diagnosed with cancer.
Anastasia sat obediently at the table, watching her mother smash everything in the house madly. She threw Anastasia’s toy to the floor and wrapped her hands around Anastasia’s neck. ‘Annie, accompany me, okay? Annie, accompany me in death. I’m worried about you. I don’t want you to stay with that scumbag!”
Anastasia’s mother cried and shouted as she went mad. She pinched Anastasia’s neck hard, wanting her daughter to die with
her.
The suffocation was a painful feeling that Anastasia could never forget.
“Mommy…” Anastasia called out to her mom with difficulty.
Not until her mom stopped breathing and fell on her did Anastasia survive the ordeal.
But from that day onward, Anastasia had no one to call mom.
“Annie, I’m doing it for your own good. I can’t bear to see you suffer alone. Without the, what will happen to you? Annie…”
“My Annie.”
On the hospital bed, Anastasia slowly opened her eyes. Her vision was blurry.
She thought, “Mom… why didn’t you hold on for longer or exert more strength on that day? You should have brought me along. If I died, I wouldn’t have to endure this suffering. Living is torture.”
“Annie, you’re awake” Kimberly was sitting beside Anastasia’s bed.
Her voice choked with sobs, and she held Anastasia in her arms and breathed a sigh of relief. “It’s great that you woke up.”
“My dad…” Anastasta whispered.
“Your dad is okay. He has been transferred to the observation ward, but… there will be an after-effect after he regains consciousness. He will most probably be paralyzed,” Kimberly stated in a low voice.
Anastasia rubbed her eyebrows. “Why isn’t he dead?”
She mused, “Why isn’t he dead? Why is he still alive?”
“Anastasia, Mom and I will go back first. You take care of Dad, okay? We are exhausted.” Sienna walked into the ward, chastising Anastasia.
After they left, Anastasia leaned against the wall and slowly slid onto the ground. She smiled at Kimberly.
Kimberly was so distressed that she moved her gaze away, wanting to cry.
“Annie…”
Kimberly wondered, “What will happen to Annie?”
“Who paid for the operation?” Anastasia suddenly remembered that Alastor had canceled her card.
“Jason,” Kimberly whispered.
Anastasia was stunned and rubbed her eyebrows. “He doesn’t have that much money…”
“Who knows? Maybe he used his credit card,” Kimberly explained in a low voice.
Anastasia lowered her head as tears welled up in her eyes. “I see…”
“Annie… I called Alastor, but he didn’t answer.” Kimberly choked with sobs.
“Kimberly, I want a divorce.”
Anastasia no longer felt like continuing her marriage with Alastor.
