In Lemira's heart, her parents' murder demanded absolute justice.
It didn't matter who was involved. It didn't matter what their reasons were.
As she forced those words past her lips, she felt her soul shatter into a million jagged pieces.
Never in her darkest nightmares had she imagined a day where she would have to aim a blade at Orion.
Seeing her overwhelming grief, Lucian felt a sharp pang of sympathy. "Lemmy, we don't have all the facts yet. You don't need to put yourself through this."
Asher let out a cold scoff. "The facts are perfectly clear, and for once, Evelina is right. I always thought it was weird that Orion decided to slum it as a high school doctor. The minute Lemira finished her college entrance exams, he vanished back to Orvin. The whole thing screams conspiracy."
Lucian sighed heavily. "But I don't think his feelings for Lemmy were entirely faked."
Even if Orion had approached her with ulterior motives, his devotion hadn't felt like an act.
Evelina let out a mocking snort. "If he didn't put on a good show, how would he get Lemira to fall hopelessly in love with him? He needed her so blindingly in love that she'd go soft on his mother when the truth came out!"
"That's enough, Evelina! Shut your mouth!"
Lucian roared, furious that she was pouring salt directly into Lemira's open wounds.
Evelina was unrepentant. "Even if I don't say it, does that make it less true? If I hadn't opened my mouth, you'd all still be playing the fool right now."
She had woven a web of lies, her story growing more outlandish by the second.
But it didn't matter. Lemira and Orion were officially ruined, and Lemira was far too proud to ever go begging Orion for the truth.
They were completely finished.
The mere thought brought Evelina immense satisfaction.
Evander shot her a venomous glare. "You're the one out of your mind. Lemira is my biological sister. Why shouldn't she come home?"
Evelina clutched her chest, feeling like she might actually explode. How could he say that?
Lucian nodded approvingly. "I'm glad you finally see it that way, Evander. No matter how bad things get between us siblings, we are family."
Evelina's face twisted into a mocking sneer. Yes, they were bound by blood. She would always be the outsider.
If she had accepted that reality earlier and cut ties with the Langstons, maybe her life wouldn't be such a trainwreck.
Asher walked straight up to Lemira. "I told you from the very beginning that Orion was wrong for you. We come from entirely different worlds. Now that you've seen the Everhart family's true colors, you need to cut ties with him immediately."
Lemira's face was completely devoid of emotion. "That is my business."
"Lemira, if you come back and rejoin the Langston Group now, we can keep the new tech project moving forward. Don't you want to see your own family succeed?"
