Not even Lemira had expected things to unfold so perfectly—perhaps even fate itself had finally had enough.
Evander jabbed a finger at Lemira, shouting, “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?”
Lemira looked at him, feigning innocence. “I didn’t do anything on purpose. That’s just karma doing its job.”
Evelina clutched her face, suddenly realizing her jaw was off-kilter.
She screamed, “Lemira, you’ve ruined my face!”
Lemira shot her a glance. “Didn’t you say you never had any cosmetic work done? So what’s that implant in your chin—were you born with it?”
Evelina burst into tears. “Asher, look at Lemira! If my face is ruined, how am I supposed to appear in commercials or interviews?”
“No need to worry. Once the official statement about your plagiarism goes out tomorrow, your career will be over anyway. You won’t have to worry about commercials ever again.”
Asher massaged his temples, speaking through clenched teeth. “Mrs. Waverly already set up a meeting with the Everhart family. Do you really think the Orvin heir would risk offending the Waverlies for you?”
“If you’re not worried, then why did you call and text me, begging me to come back and talk?”
“Lemira, the circles of the elite are complicated. All they care about is profit. Even if that heir is fond of you, he can’t go up against his whole family for your sake.”
Lemira’s lips curled into a faint smile. “Don’t try to fool me with that. The company is co-owned by Orion and Thaddeus—I hold a stake as the tech lead. Mrs. Waverly used illegal means to compete. Do you really think the Everharts care more about their relationship with the Waverlies than their own interests?”
Asher was suddenly at a loss for words.
His tone softened considerably. “So, what do you want to do?”
“Just do what needs to be done. ‘To the victor go the spoils’—didn’t you teach me that, Asher?”
Lemira stood her ground, unwavering.
Evelina’s sobs only grew louder beside them. “Asher, my face hurts so much!”
Evander, limping badly, chimed in, “Asher, shouldn’t you be taking Eve to the hospital?”
Asher immediately arranged for a car to take Evelina to the hospital, and Evander followed in his wheelchair.
