When They Beg I Rise (Lemira) novel Chapter 579

Lemira heard Evander's question, and truth be told, she was just as curious.

Asher was always defending Evelina, even when he knew about the kickbacks her foundation was taking. Still, he was determined to help her out of any mess.

Could it be that Asher had feelings for Evelina too?

The moment Evander voiced his thoughts, the room fell into an awkward silence.

Evelina shot Evander a bewildered look. Honestly, she hadn't given it much thought. After all, Asher was hardly around and much older than her, so she never really considered it.

But if Asher did have a thing for her, it would certainly be preferable over Evander, right?

Asher snapped at Evander, "What nonsense are you spouting? I've always seen Evelina as a sister. Do you think everyone is like you, unable to keep your hands off even your own family?"

Asher was fuming.

To suggest he had a romantic interest in Evelina was absurd. His protectiveness had reasons, but love was definitely not one of them. He wasn't that desperate.

Evander was visibly annoyed. "But Eve isn't our real sister."

"True, but I handled Evelina's adoption. Legally, she's part of our family. You can't marry her."

Lemira hadn't thought of it that way, but it made sense. They might not be blood-related, but the law was clear on this.

Evander was taken aback, unsure. "Is that true?"

Evelina quickly confirmed, "Evander, I think the law is pretty clear on this."

She felt relieved. The last thing she wanted was to marry Evander, but she’d temporarily agreed to keep the peace.

But now Asher had made the situation clear.

Asher was at his wit’s end. Could Evander really not see the bigger picture?

Evelina wasn’t interested in him for love. There had to be something else at play, but Asher couldn’t say that.

Lemira watched the drama unfold with a smirk. "Asher, just agree already. It’ll make Evelina even more tied to the Langston family. Isn’t that a good thing?"

"Lemmy, I know you want me out of the picture, but canceling an adoption less than a year in would be a joke. How could I live that down?"

Evelina felt anxious. The last thing she wanted was for Asher to agree.

Evander tried to reassure her, "Eve, don't worry. We can move to a new city where no one knows us, and then no one will gossip."

Evelina was not thrilled at all. Her life was in Orvin, and she wasn’t about to run off to some small town.
