Evelina was absolutely fuming as she turned to Asher, tears welling up in her eyes. "Asher, did you see what happened? I told you Lemira knew that old lady and even encouraged her to lay a hand on me!"
Asher's expression soured the moment he laid eyes on Mrs. Amanda. He hadn't anticipated that the person who had just gone to the lounge was none other than Mrs. Amanda. Without a second thought, he slapped Evelina across the face. "What nonsense are you spouting? Apologize immediately!"
"Asher, that old lady attacked me! Why should I apologize?" Evelina replied, her voice trembling with indignation.
Asher was so exasperated he could hardly think straight. He seized Evelina's wrist and snapped, "I said apologize. Now!"
Evelina was taken aback by Asher's sternness. "Asher, why are you being so harsh?" After all, she thought, it's just an old woman. How important could she be?
Just then, Mrs. Grace Draven walked over, affectionately linking arms with Mrs. Amanda. "Mrs. Amanda, I hadn't seen you anywhere and thought maybe this charity auction was beneath you, so you left."
Mrs. Amanda's voice dripped with sarcasm. "Oh, I just felt a bit unwell, so I took a moment in the lounge. The Langston family's apology, though, is more than I deserve."
Asher's face blushed with embarrassment as he quickly explained, "Mrs. Amanda, I apologize. We didn't know you'd be here today. Please forgive our shortcomings in hospitality."
Mrs. Amanda?
Evelina's mind went blank, her lips quivering. "Asher, are you saying she's the matriarch of the Everhart family?"
Asher shot a sharp look at Evelina. "Exactly. Do you realize the mess you've caused?"
Evelina almost lost her balance hearing Asher's confirmation. Nobody told her Mrs. Amanda would be here today. What was she going to do now?
Asher hurriedly tried to smooth things over. "Mrs. Amanda, my sister here is a bit naive and too outspoken. Please don't take it to heart."
