Chapter 331
Even Jessica might not have expected that, after vowing to stay far away from royal men, she’d end up getting this close to Leon.
It was all so surreal.
Before she knew it, it had already happened.
But she had a strength others lacked; once something happened, she never dwelt on right or wrong. Her focus was always on the path ahead.
“Garbisch, Lincoln will probably come knocking soon,” she said. “Go stall him again. Just tell him Leon helped you take down the rebels last night, get a bit too happy celebrating, had a few extra drinks, and is still sleeping it off in your courtyard”
“But…” Garbisch hesitated, clearly uneasy. “The assassination attempt on Malik in the palace is a serious offense. Now that they’ve arrested Leon’s uncle, this is no ordinary family connection. Shouldn’t we be more courteous to the High Court officials?”
‘Putting on airs like this will only make it harder to deal with Lincoln in the future,‘ Garbisch thought.
Jessica chuckled and said, “Why bother being polite? Lincoln is a stickler for the rules. He only cares about evidence, not personal connections. The more polite you are to him, the more he’ll think you’re in the wrong.”
Garbisch said nothing more.
Jessica does make sense, but I still can’t help feeling uneasy,‘ Garbisch thought to himself.
Getting on the wrong side of the High Court was nothing but trouble. Those officials were a real pain to deal with.
“Mr. Yates, the Deputy Minister of the High Court has arrived,” Nolan announced from outside.
“Garbisch, go on,” Jessica said. “Don’t let him set foot in your courtyard. Just have him wait in the main hall. If he dares to barge in, tell him to produce the King’s royal decree.”
Garbisch blinked in surprise and asked, “Do we really… have to be this tough?”
Jessica had always left room for future reconciliation in her dealings, never burning bridges. It was truly out of character to see her act so uncompromisingly.
“It’s fine. He’s just as tough as I am. Birds of a feather, really,” Jessica said, waving her hand dismissively.
Reluctantly, Garbisch went to greet Lincoln in person, knowing he had no other choice.
No matter how chaotic things got up front, Jessica paid no heed and simply let Leon continue his slumber.
In the meantime, Monica came by twice with updates.
The first time, Lincoln, in a fit of anger, smashed his cup and tried to force his way into Garbisch’s Lucid Pavilion to see him in person. But Garbisch stopped him; reportedly, they even got into a scuffle.
Lincoln was stunned that the usually mild–mannered Garbisch was suddenly acting so stubborn. He tried to assert himself, but Garbisch wouldn’t give an inch, leaving Lincoln completely at a loss.
The second time, Monica returned to report that Lincoln and Garbisch were chatting and getting along peacefully.
And so it went, until by evening, Leon had finally fully sobered up.
After washing up, Leon changed into the new clothes Shawn had expressly brought for him. With an air of confidence, he swaggered out of Moonchase Hall, completely unfazed by the commotion outside.
