Though his heart ached with the desire to lock the door and keep her by his side forever, Nathaniel resisted the urge. He had used such possessive tactics before, and they had only pushed Mavis further away. Her strong-willed nature rebelled against such pressure.
Considering this, he carefully suggested, "Why don't you rest for a bit? You'll be better able to care for the patient if you're well-rested yourself."
"That's true, but…" Mavis hesitated.
"No buts," Nathaniel interrupted, giving her a reassuring look. "Don't worry, I've already arranged for Evan to have the best 24-hour personal care."
Mavis frowned slightly, eyeing him with suspicion.
"Personal care? Why didn't you consult me first?"
Nathaniel smiled. "I'm telling you now, aren't I?"
Mavis countered, "Evan probably won't like strangers taking care of him. I've already asked Dylan to help me look after him."
She glanced at the time and realized she had been with Nathaniel for nearly an hour and a half. Moreover, Evan was emotionally unstable, and she was not sure if Dylan had arrived at the hospital yet.
"If there's nothing else, I should go," she said, standing up.
Seeing her about to leave, Nathaniel suddenly doubled over, clutching his chest with one hand and grimacing in pain.
"What's wrong?" Mavis asked, quickly moving to support him.
"Just… some chest pain…" he gasped, his face suddenly pale and covered in sweat.
It did not look like he was faking.
Mavis found herself listening to his heartbeat, momentarily forgetting to pull away from his embrace.
"Dylan's hand hasn't fully healed yet. It's not convenient for him to take care of someone one-handed. A professional caregiver could look after Evan more thoroughly," Nathaniel persuaded her gently.
"You have your own work to do, and Callum needs you when he gets out of kindergarten. You can't give all your time to Evan and neglect your job and Callum, can you?"
Mavis reluctantly admitted he had a point. The Nicholls Group had just partnered with her company in Vraeyce, and there were many details to sort out. With Evan hospitalized and practically bedridden, she would have to handle the work herself, not trusting anyone else with it.
She needed to earn money to support Callum, and she did not want to waste this opportunity to collaborate with Nathaniel and potentially lose out on a profitable venture.
Besides, there was Callum to consider.
