Nathaniel wondered when he stopped letting Sheena's emotions dictate his actions, even causing him to act out in extreme ways.
Troy's phone suddenly rang, interrupting the stillness in the car and pulling Nathaniel out of his thoughts.
"...Yes, I understand. I'll inform Mr. Nicholls right away."
Troy hung up and immediately reported, "Mr. Nicholls, the National Investigation Bureau just called. They would like you to come in again to continue assisting with the investigation of Declan's cases."
"Alright. Let's head over."
The car turned around, changing course.
…
Ascend Apartment.
Evan had prepared several seafood dishes, and the three had already started eating.
Evan asked, "Mae, should I set aside some dishes for Mr. Nicholls in case he returns later?"
"No need. He's probably busy with something else."
Mavis was focused on feeding Callum, making sure her little boy was well-fed.
"Mommy, I want some shrimp. Can you help me peel it?"
Before Mavis could answer, Evan smiled and chimed in, "Let me peel it for you. I'm really good at it."
However, Callum did not look pleased at all.
He flatly refused, "No, Grandma Mildred said I shouldn't take food from strangers!"
For some reason, Callum just did not like Evan, much like how he felt about Tiffany.
Mavis tapped his nose playfully, chuckling.
"But Uncle Evan isn't a stranger. Besides, he made this entire meal tonight. You were enjoying it just a few minutes ago."
Callum was shocked.
His face scrunched up as he said, "Well, I didn't know who made the food. If I had known, I wouldn't have eaten it."
With that, he put down his spoon and hopped down from his chair, darting into the bedroom.
"Callum," Mavis called after him.
Even so, she could not bear to say a single harsh word to him.
She coaxed gently, "Alright, how about I make something for you later? Don't stay under the cover too long, or you'll start feeling stuffy."
She pulled back the blanket, revealing Callum's bright, teary eyes.
His cheeks were flushed, and his little nose was red as if he were about to cry.
Mavis's heart clenched. "What's wrong, sweetheart? Did I do something to make you feel sad?"
Callum shook his head.
His little voice was serious as he said between sniffles, "Daddy, Grandma Mildred, and you are all keeping secrets from me, but I already know. Mommy, you aren't staying with us because you're planning to divorce Daddy, right?"
Mavis froze.
"When you and Daddy really split up, will he be with Tiffany, and you'll choose Evan?"
As he spoke, tears rolled down his cheeks.
He murmured, "Daddy never liked me very much, and now you don't want me either. Does that mean… I'm going to end up a kid nobody wants?"
