What was Nathaniel up to?
Mildred glanced between Mavis and Ricky, her eyes narrowing with suspicion.
"What's going on? Mae, did you come here specifically to see Nate? Is this about the divorce?"
Since Mildred hit the nail on the board, Mavis decided there was no point hiding it.
"Yes, we had set a time for the meeting."
Mildred frowned. "Maybe he got stuck in traffic, or something came up. Why don't you have some tea while you wait? Callum is still at the kindergarten, so it's just me at home. If you don't mind, how about keeping me company for a while?"
"Of course I don't mind," Mavis replied with a soft smile. "I never had grandparents growing up. Ever since I joined the Nicholls family, I've always seen you as my real grandma. I hope you won't mind me being here and interrupting you."
Mildred chuckled and took Mavis's hand, happily chatting away.
…
Svelton Airport.
Evan's plane landed right on time.
Tall and slender, with short brown curls and a pair of glasses, Evan pulled his suitcase behind him as he exited the terminal.
He looked around eagerly, scanning the crowd for a familiar face.
Yet, Mavis was nowhere to be seen.
Had the scheduled message failed to reach her?
Had she not received it?
Suddenly remembering his phone, Evan reached into his pocket to power it on.
As he did, several burly figures appeared in front of him, deliberately blocking his path.
Confused, Evan looked up.
The men seemed to be bodyguards.
"Who are you?"
"Let me out! I want to get out of the car!"
Evan started to struggle, but it was over almost as soon as it began.
Troy simply glanced at the bodyguards, and one of them delivered a swift strike to the back of Evan's head.
He slumped unconscious in his seat.
The car eventually pulled into the garage of a hotel owned by the Nicholls family, and the bodyguards carried the unconscious Evan out of the vehicle while Troy led the way.
As the electronic key beeped, the door to room 438 slowly opened.
Inside, a man sat by the window with his back to the door.
He was smoking, the room heavy with suffocating tension.
Troy entered respectfully and reported, "Mr. Nicholls, we've brought him. How should we handle this? Do you want us to rough him up first?"
Evan was dropped onto the carpet, still unconscious.
