Mavis was lost in thought, replaying Nathaniel's words.
Just a few days ago, he had promised to handle her return to the country as quickly as possible. He said they needed to publicly announce her return before they could finalize the divorce and secure Callum's custody.
The more she thought about it, the less tasty the barbecue in her mouth became.
Having lost her appetite, she set down her skewer.
"I need to use the restroom."
Sheena watched her retreating figure as she walked away and immediately said, "Mae seems upset. I'll go check on her."
"Mom, wait."
Sheena was just about to get up when Adora stopped her.
The young girl shot a playful glance at Nathaniel and added, "I think there's someone else here who's better suited to cheer her up."
Her implication was clear, and even Callum understood.
"Daddy, I bet you need to go to the bathroom too, right?"
Everyone around the barbecue turned to look at Nathaniel.
He stood up, not showing much emotion.
"I'll be right back."
In the hallway, Mavis was trying to find the restroom on the first floor, relying on her memory.
Just as she was about to enter, Nathaniel quickly closed the distance between them, grabbed her wrist, and pulled her into his arms.
When Mavis realized what had happened, she was already pressed against his chest.
"What do you think you're doing?"
"Nathaniel!" Mavis was furious, her anger burning hot enough that she wanted to tear him apart right then and there.
Nathaniel turned to leave, but before he could take more than a few steps, a ringtone cut through the quiet hallway.
It was Mavis's phone.
Nathaniel did not turn around, but he could hear Mavis speaking softly into the phone.
"Evan, it must be late night in Vraeyce with the time difference. What's going on? Why are you calling at this hour?"
At the mention of Evan's name, Nathaniel froze, and his expression darkened even more.
"...I just finished dinner here. You don't need to worry about me. No one in Froania can trouble me. Yes, I—"
Before she could finish her sentence, Nathaniel was on her, his tall frame dominating as he grabbed the back of her head and forcefully pressed his lips against hers, silencing her with an overpowering kiss...
