Nathaniel's lighthearted comment carried a hint of bitterness and sarcasm, making Mavis feel uncomfortable.
Those good impressions of him that she had started to build up instantly vanished.
She thought Nathaniel was just a jerk. While he was indeed handsome when he stayed quiet, the nonsense he spouted the moment he opened his mouth was ridiculous. It was impossible to approach him without getting hurt.
He was still the same Nathaniel as before. Nothing had really changed.
The idea of him being considerate and domestic?
It was all an illusion.
"This is my business," she said flatly, implying that it was none of his concern.
Nathaniel scoffed.
Somehow, the coffee tasted even more bitter, leaving an unpleasant taste in his mouth.
The only sounds at the table were the soft clinks of silverware against plates, creating a heavy, awkward silence.
With his cheeks puffed out from the food, Callum glanced at his parents, but he did not sense anything amiss.
Curious, he asked, "A man from abroad? Who's that? Do I know him?"
"You don't know him, Callum. He's a work partner from abroad named Evan Mueller. He's a really nice, cheerful guy. Maybe one day, I'll introduce you to him."
Callum blinked his innocent eyes and said, "Is he your good friend?"
"Yes, a very good friend."
Callum beamed. "That sounds great! I'd love to meet your good friend."
Mavis gently stroked his head as her heart warmed at his sweetness.
Meanwhile, Nathaniel's expression darkened.
He urged, "Finish up, Callum. You need to get to kindergarten."
"Okay…"
Callum could tell Nathaniel was holding back his anger from his tone, but he did not understand why his father was suddenly upset.
He stuck out his tongue at him and muttered, "Daddy, you're the meanest."
In ten minutes, the three of them silently finished breakfast.
His warm breath on her skin sent shivers down her spine.
"What are you doing?"
Nathaniel's voice was hoarse as he whispered in her ear, "Have you and Evan been living together?"
Mavis did not respond and continued washing the dishes.
"Has he ever held you like this? How many times? Have you two ever…"
Slept together?
Mavis was in disbelief and chose to ignore him.
"Mr. Nicholls, you should focus more on discussing our divorce rather than prying into my personal life."
"Until our divorce is finalized, our marriage is legally protected. So, your 'personal life' is my business too."
Mavis remained silent.
"Why didn't you tell Callum the truth just now? That Evan is your boyfriend and you're planning to give him a stepdad? Are you afraid to tell him the truth?"
