In the early evening, Sheena received a call just as she got off work and immediately rushed to Callum's kindergarten.
The sports day event had long since ended, and the once-lively playground was being cleaned up by the staff under the principal's supervision.
Most of the children had already gone home with their parents, leaving only a few still waiting on the playground for someone to pick them up.
Sheena glanced around briefly before quietly entering the school.
Callum was asleep on one of the small beds in the nap room, with Mavis sitting beside him. Her eyes were filled with tenderness and love as she looked at him.
Sheena quietly walked over and asked, "Mae, why did you call me over? Is there something you need?"
Mavis leaned down to kiss Callum gently on the forehead before signaling to Sheena to step outside for a private conversation.
Sheena understood immediately, and they both quietly left the room, walking to the end of the hallway.
"Is he… seeing someone new? Does he plan to remarry and give Callum a stepmother?"
Sheena was taken aback by the question.
"I really don't know. I can look into it and let you know."
Mavis shook her head. "No need. I was just asking. After all, I'm supposed to be 'dead' now, so his personal life is none of my business. If his new wife treats Callum well, I wouldn't have any objections."
Sheena did not know how to respond.
It was obvious that Mavis had not completely moved on from Nathaniel, as she was still asking about him. The fact that she still avoided mentioning his name just proved that she still cared about him.
When would she finally admit her true feelings?
Sheena sighed.
"Today is the school's sports day, but that man didn't show up. I was worried Callum would be upset, so I came. But now I'm concerned that this might be hard to explain to the Nicholls family. Can you take Callum back to them for me and help explain the situation?"
Sheena readily agreed to Mavis' request.
Within a few minutes, Sheena carried the sleeping Callum out of the kindergarten.
The Nicholls family bodyguards, who had been watching from a distance, immediately followed her out.
Sheena did not pay them any mind as she gently placed Callum in her car.
Then, she said, "I'll be taking Callum home today. You don't need to follow."
Before he could think of something, the butler, Hugh, chimed in, "Madam Nicholls, Mr. Nicholls mentioned earlier that he had arranged math and foreign language tutoring for Mr. Callum this weekend. Since he'll be entering primary school soon, Mr. Nicholls doesn't want him to slack off."
So much for the weekend fun.
Callum's bright blue eyes dimmed as he realized he would not get to play after all.
Mildred noticed how disappointed Callum looked and glared at Hugh.
"We're talking about Callum's plans for his free time, not his studies. You didn't need to dampen his spirits like that."
Hugh quickly realized his mistake and bowed apologetically.
"I'm sorry, that wasn't my intention."
Without saying another word, Callum let go of Mildred's hand and headed upstairs.
As he passed Nathaniel's study, he noticed the door was closed, but the light inside was still on. Even though it was late, it seemed Nathaniel was still busy with work.
Callum approached the study, ready to knock.
