Harriette smiled warmly and replied, "Well, in Svelton, I can only think of one Mr. Nicholls who could afford to buy an entire apartment building downtown."
She continued, "But I must say, Mr. Nicholls and his wife seem to have a wonderful relationship. Imagine gifting someone an entire building."
Mavis's face turned pale under her mask.
Mr. Nicholls… Ms. Olsen…
Nathaniel had bought the small apartment she used to live in and placed it under her name.
When had he done that?
Even though the property was technically hers, she knew she could not stay there.
As Harriette continued searching for Nathaniel's number, Mavis quickly stopped her.
"It's alright. You don't have to call him. I've changed my mind. I won't be renting the apartment."
"Hold on, dear. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be. I'll have Mr. Nicholls on the line in just a moment."
Before Mavis could protest further, Harriette had already found the number and dialed it.
She put the phone on speaker, and the call was answered almost immediately.
"Hello?"
The deep, masculine voice on the other end was unmistakable.
Mavis clenched her hands tightly.
"Mr. Nicholls? There's a young lady here who wants to rent the apartment at 16-3. Should I go ahead with it?"
There was a brief pause on the other end.
"Who is it?"
"Well…" Harriette hesitated, turning around. "Dear, what's your name? Hey, where did she go?"
The hallway was empty. Mavis had already vanished.
It was Nathaniel's car.
Mavis instinctively crouched, wanting to hide. However, the horn kept blaring—loud and impatient.
The driver behind her was clearly irritated.
Mavis forced herself to stay calm, quickly surveying her surroundings.
The narrow street was lined with parked cars on both sides, leaving her no choice but to park in the main lane, blocking the car behind her.
Nathaniel's driver was likely just trying to get her out of the way, and he was not coming to get her.
She took a deep breath, started the engine, and slowly drove off, clearing the path for the Rolls-Royce.
As soon as she pulled away, the luxury car continued down the road, turning a corner before stopping in front of the apartment building.
Nathaniel got out of the car quickly, his expression tense.
He did not give a second thought to the car that had blocked his path.
