When Nathaniel arrived with Callum's favorite pumpkin soup, Callum was asleep in bed, his small, pale face marked with tear stains.
Mildred's eyes were red from crying.
Nathaniel noticed something was wrong and asked, "Grandma, what's the matter?"
"Callum woke up about ten minutes ago, clinging to me and crying. He wouldn't tell me why, and now he's cried himself to sleep again."
She glanced at the clock. "It's only 6.30 a.m. You've been up all night. Why are you back so soon?"
"I couldn't sleep. I thought Callum might not like the hospital breakfast, so I bought some pumpkin soup from a nearby restaurant."
Nathaniel set down the food and sat by Callum's bed, carefully using a damp cloth to wipe Callum's face.
Mildred patted her chest, trying to soothe herself as she asked, "How's your injury?"
"It's nothing to worry about, Grandma. I'm fine."
Nathaniel had gotten an X-ray, which showed no broken bones, just significant swelling in his shoulder.
He had used ice last night, and the doctor recommended wearing a brace or bandage to prevent further injury.
However, Nathaniel did not want to scare Callum with the brace, so he decided against it.
After making sure Callum looked clean and refreshed, Nathaniel noticed that Mildred's condition was not ideal.
"Grandma, you should rest. I'll stay here with Callum."
Before Mildred could object, Nathaniel added, "I've already called Hugh to come pick you up. You need to take care of yourself. If you let me worry about you too, it won't help anyone."
"Alright, but if anything comes up with Callum, call me."
…
In another room.
Asher's grip tightened on the blanket, his face remaining calm.
"Callum and I were attacked and kidnapped in the park. They initially planned to dismember Callum, but I convinced them to use him to extort money from Nathaniel. Then, they said Nathaniel's money wasn't enough and could only save one of us. Nathaniel chose me, and Callum was thrown off the rooftop…"
Elliot listened quietly, waiting until Asher finished before asking, "Are you sure that's the whole truth?"
Asher pressed his lips together, remaining silent.
"You deliberately tricked Callum into attending a non-existent event to get rid of the bodyguards. This allowed the kidnappers to act. We found the drug used to sedate Callum at the scene, but your monitoring device didn't alert Nana or me, meaning you weren't drugged. The kidnappers used you to extort Nathaniel. That was your idea, wasn't it? The knife at your neck and forcing Nathaniel to make a choice were also your ideas. You staged the whole thing, using Callum and yourself as pawns to get back at Nathaniel, am I right?"
The kidnappers had already confessed to the full details of the crime.
Originally, it was meant to be a targeted attack on the Nicholls family, and they had not intended to harm Asher.
Asher looked away, biting his lip in silence.
Elliot stared at his son's face, which looked so much like his own, with disbelief. "You're only eleven, yet you have such a level of scheming. Did you ever consider the consequences if the rescue had failed?"
