Nathaniel woke up groggily, staring at Mavis in confusion. Once he regained his senses, he quickly withdrew his hands.
He sat up and awkwardly ran a hand through his hair, glancing back at Mavis.
However, she was already calmly getting dressed as if nothing had happened, seemingly more composed than he was.
In truth, Mavis was deeply unsettled by the unexpected situation but pretended to be calm.
Mind over matter! If she acted unbothered, it would not be awkward!
…
At breakfast, Mildred seemed particularly cheerful. Gabrielle also seemed to have noticed something, glancing at Mavis and Nathaniel with a knowing smile.
"Mae, why are you up so early? You should sleep in a bit more. Grandma won't mind, right?" Gabrielle teased.
Mildred shot her a look. "Gabrielle, sometimes it's better to keep quiet."
Mavis was feeling increasingly uncomfortable the more they spoke.
Nathaniel finished his breakfast and left for work.
Mavis also needed to go to the office, so Mildred suggested, "You're both going to the same company. Nate, why don't you give Mae a ride?"
Before Nathaniel could respond, Mavis declined.
"Grandma, if we ride together, it might cause unnecessary gossip. The Nicholls Group isn't a small company, and we have to consider the family's reputation."
Mildred thought about it and realized Mavis was right, and her opinion of Mavis improved even more.
This girl understood everything, was devoted to Nathaniel, and could see the bigger picture.
She was a perfect granddaughter-in-law!
It was just a pity her grandson could not see it.
After Nathaniel and Mavis left, Mildred stood by the window, sighing repeatedly.
Gabrielle was playing a game and noticed Mildred's frustration.
She asked, "Grandma, what's wrong?"
Mildred wanted to vent and began, "I…"
Elliot peeled an egg for each of the kids, smiling.
"We can't stay. You two need to behave and eat on time. Mommy and I need some alone time."
"Alone time?"
Adora pouted.
Out of nowhere, Asher muttered, "You're both driven by basic desires."
Elliot and Sheena exchanged a glance, bursting into laughter at Asher's surprisingly insightful comment.
He was so young yet already understood such concepts.
Before they could finish breakfast, Sheena's phone rang.
It was the school principal, Samuel.
"Mrs. Jenkins, I'm sorry to bother you, but we need you to come to the school again. There's been a bit of an issue…"
