Asher huffed, then punched Adora's cheek with his other hand that was not hooked to the IV.
"Not jumping up to hug Nathaniel this time? Impressive. Alright, I'll reluctantly accept your gift."
Adora giggled.
Meanwhile, a pair of eyes watched them from outside the window—Nathaniel had returned.
His once handsome and cold face appeared troubled and guilty.
He stood silently at the door for two hours before finally leaving without a word.
That evening, Nathaniel returned to the Nicholls residence after finishing his work at the company.
It had been half a month since his last visit.
When Seymour saw him, he rushed forward and greeted, "Sir, you're finally home."
Nathaniel nodded, took off his coat, and handed it to Seymour.
Then, he walked straight inside.
As he entered the living room, he heard laughter and then Gabrielle's voice.
"Mae, I didn't know you had things you weren't good at. I thought you were better than me at everything."
"Oh, stop it. I'm just following instructions. I really can't get the hang of knitting. Gabrielle, you take over. I'll—"
Mavis stopped mid-sentence when she saw Nathaniel standing behind her.
Gabrielle noticed Mavis' change in expression and turned around.
Seeing the couple staring at each other, she grabbed her things and left, giving them some privacy.
Nathaniel and Mavis stood facing each other in silence for a long time.
Finally, Mavis broke eye contact and turned to go upstairs.
"Wait…" Nathaniel started but could not continue, his words stuck in his throat.
Just to ask her to accompany him to the lab?
She stared at him, perplexed.
Feeling her gaze, Nathaniel inexplicably felt a bit guilty.
He lowered his eyes, hiding the deep blue of his pupils.
After a long pause, Mavis finally asked, "How is Asher? Is it serious?"
The last time she had seen Asher was at the ice rink, and she missed the little guy.
Besides, her resentment toward Nathaniel had lessened, though the distance between them still remained.
At least they could have a normal conversation.
"Asher is about to start elementary school, but… because of his health, he might not be able to attend the entrance ceremony."
Seeing the rare expression of guilt and regret on Nathaniel's face, Mavis hesitated.
