Only then did Nathaniel notice how pale Mavis looked, and he wondered how badly she was hurt.
He immediately set her down but kept his hands on her shoulders for support.
Gabrielle was just as shocked by Mavis's pain.
"Mae, did you really just fall while ice skating? How did you get this hurt?"
Unable to speak from the pain, Mavis shook her head.
Nathaniel helped her slowly up the stairs and settled her in the guest room.
Then, he sighed quietly and left, heading to his study.
Watching him walk away, Mavis felt a wave of sadness.
Even a stranger would show more concern for someone so injured, yet he seemed unwilling to look at her.
Did he really not care about her at all?
Was this what it meant to be unloved?
Her heart ached with the unfairness of it all.
On the other hand, Gabrielle stayed by her side, bringing her tea and asking about her condition.
"Mae, should we call a doctor to come here? Or do you want some painkillers?"
Mavis shook her head weakly.
"Gabrielle, I just want to be alone for a while. I'll call you if I need anything, okay?"
She could not stop thinking about Nathaniel's cold and emotionless eyes when he had carried her.
Was he… really so heartless?
Seeing Mavis close her eyes, Gabrielle, though worried, reluctantly left her alone.
In his study, Nathaniel was on the phone with the top orthopedic specialist in the country.
"Yes, he's in the study. What's the matter?"
Seymour stared at him, still puzzled.
With only minutes left before Nathaniel's deadline, Robert did not have time to explain and rushed into the house.
To his surprise, Nathaniel was sitting in the living room, calmly drinking tea.
When he saw Robert, Nathaniel stood up immediately.
"Follow me upstairs," he said.
Robert followed, still panting.
He had just returned from an international medical conference and had not had a moment's rest.
Moreover, he lived at least thirty kilometers from the Nicholls residence and had to run several red lights to get there in time.
They entered Mavis's room, and their eyes met.
