"I'll go see Nate, then." Gabrielle said, not bothering to check the receptionist's reaction as she headed straight for the elevator.
Once she reached the top floor, Tommy, who knew Gabrielle, greeted her respectfully.
Gabrielle waved him off, indicating she wanted to explore on her own.
She made her way to the CEO's office and, without knocking, pushed the door open.
She saw Nathaniel was deeply engrossed in his work and purposely called out in a playful, exaggerated tone.
"Nate…"
Her voice shattered his concentration.
He looked up to see Gabrielle seated across from him, shaking his head with a mix of amusement and exasperation as he closed his files.
"What brought you here?"
Gabrielle huffed, a hint of annoyance in her voice.
"It's obviously about you and Mae! Nate, Mae chose to sleep in a separate room, and you have nothing to say about it? And what about that girl from the fishing village? I know about her. Are you really falling for her?"
Nathaniel did not respond immediately to her probing.
"You have no idea what Mae went through when we couldn't reach you."
At the mention of Mavis, Nathaniel froze.
"She was so worried, Nate. She couldn't eat or sleep. She was constantly on her phone, waiting for any news about you. It was heartbreaking to watch how her worry took a toll on her body."
Nathaniel's grip on his pen tightened before he finally put it down, his gaze meeting Gabrielle's, signaling her to go on.
"If it weren't for Sheena urging Mae to find you, she might have completely lost it. She genuinely cares about you," Gabrielle huffed.
After a moment's pause, she pressed on, "And what did you do? You were with that girl from the fishing village. You broke Mae's heart!"
Nathaniel stayed silent.
Even though he held the pen tightly, he could not continue writing.
How could he fix this?
He and Mavis were at odds, and after their argument that morning, a simple apology would not be enough.
Mavis had left the office, and even at the Nicholls residence, they slept in separate rooms.
They barely saw each other.
Maybe buying a gift would help…
Nathaniel knew girls' obsession with pretty things, and a thoughtful present might open the door to a private conversation.
Just as he was about to unlock his phone, a video call came in unexpectedly.
He glanced at the screen—Kristen.
He hesitated for a moment before answering.
The screen lit up, and Kristen's beautiful face appeared, her smile sweet and innocent.
