Mavis could not hold back her emotions any longer.
She bit her lower lip, trying to suppress her sobs.
"It's okay. Is it urgent over there? Is it very dangerous?"
She had heard about how chaotic Gurenchti was, with constant conflict and frequent street violence.
"The danger is manageable. The new company here ran into some trouble, and I need to handle it personally. If things go smoothly, I'll be back in two days."
If things did not go smoothly, there was no telling how long it might take.
However, Nathaniel did not elaborate on the specifics.
The local gang had captured some of their company's employees and was demanding a huge ransom.
If Nathaniel did not show up within a day, they threatened to kill a hostage.
The gang leader was known for following through on his threats, and Nathaniel could not ignore the safety of his employees.
Mavis remembered hearing from other assistants that the Nicholls Group had opened a new company in Gurenchti to mine gemstones and start a jewelry business.
If Nathaniel had to handle the situation personally, it must be serious.
Nathaniel continued, "Go home early. While I'm away, you don't need to come to the office. Also, I'll make it up to you for our missed date."
Mavis held the phone, slightly stunned by his response.
This was the first time he had explained his whereabouts to her and acknowledged their date.
"I'm just glad you're alright. I'll wait for you to come back."
"Mm. Also, don't contact me for a while. That's it."
"But…"
Back in Harbor City, she often heard thunder like this.
Each time, she would cower in her room, too scared to come out.
Ironically, she was facing it head-on this time.
The rain came pouring down, quickly drenching Mavis' clothes.
She listened to the distant screams of pedestrians, watching as the smoke rose from the streets, her vision blurred by the rain.
Cupping her hands, she let the rain pour over them, the downpour mercilessly hitting against her pale face.
It was time to go home.
Before Mavis could stand up, a car roared past, splashing mud onto her skirt.
In the blink of an eye, her white knit dress was stained with layers of mud spots.
