Bringing the coffee into the office again, Mavis carefully pushed the cup toward Nathaniel.
"Mr. Nicholls, I've made a fresh cup. Please try it, and if it's not right, I'll make another."
Nathaniel slowly lifted his head at her words, giving her a brief glance.
He took a sip of the coffee.
At first, his brow furrowed, and his expression shifted, displaying a complex mix of emotions on his usually stoic face.
As time passed, Nathaniel seemed to be deep in thought.
Mavis felt sweat bead on her nose, her heart pounding.
Her mind raced with all sorts of anxious possibilities about what Nathaniel might say.
The silence in the office stretched on, making her so tense she could barely breathe.
Nathaniel smirked, finding her reactions amusing.
However, he quickly composed himself, setting the cup down with a serious expression as he finally uttered a single word, "Mm."
That one word made Mavis breathe a sigh of relief, feeling as if a weight had been lifted off her shoulders.
"Is there anything else you need, Mr. Nicholls?"
The few minutes waiting for his response felt like an eternity!
"That will be all," he replied, his attention already back on his screen.
Taking this as her cue to leave, Mavis nodded respectfully and walked out of the office, carefully closing the door behind her.
Once outside, she could not contain her joy and raised the tray, making a victory pose.
She was filled with exhilaration!
She finally had the chance to work by Nathaniel's side and was determined not to mess it up.
Moreover, she wanted to prove herself to everyone who doubted her, showing them she was capable and worthy of respect.
"The files are all on the sofa. Take them yourself," Aileen said, barely looking up from her keyboard as she continued typing away.
Seeing how busy Aileen was, Mavis decided not to disturb her further, but she froze in place when she glanced at the mountain of files on the sofa.
She could not possibly be expected to carry all of these, right?
Confused, she turned to Aileen and asked, "Ms. Hayward, do you know which specific files Mr. Nicholls needs?"
"All of them. Take them all. Now, hurry along," Aileen replied, her tone brisk and focused on her work as if even one more word would disrupt her progress.
What?
All of them?
Mavis was dumbfounded.
How was she supposed to carry such a massive stack of files alone?
