Nathaniel's eyes were full of disdain, making Mavis even more embarrassed.
After all, this plan was the result of an entire afternoon's work.
She quickly moved to block her screen, stammering, "I-I'm not done yet! This is just a draft!"
There was no confidence in her voice.
She was not good at creating plans, but thankfully, Aileen had given her two weeks to refine it.
Nathaniel decided not to crush her spirit any further and asked, "Are you planning to sleep at the office tonight?"
Judging by her current state, she might have actually spent the night there if he had not come.
He simply could not understand what she was thinking.
Mavis finally noticed the time. It was almost 10 p.m.
Her stomach growled loudly, and a blush quickly spread from her neck to her ears.
"You haven't eaten?"
Mavis nodded.
She would not have realized it was past quitting time if he had not shown up.
Nathaniel was displeased and said coldly, "Pack up. We're going home."
Mavis did not dare to refuse.
She quickly saved her work, grabbed her bag, and followed him out.
He walked fast, and Mavis had to practically jog to keep up.
Before long, the luxury car roared to life and sped off, causing Mavis to cling to her seatbelt in fear.
It was quite late when they got home, and Gabrielle approached them with a teasing smile.
"Nate, you workaholic! You get so wrapped up in work that you forget everything else. Mae is weak! How can you make her stay late with you? Look at how pale she is."
Knowing Gabrielle had misunderstood the situation, Mavis quickly explained, "No, Gabrielle, it was me working late. Nate just stayed with me and that's why we're home so late."
Gabrielle gave her a knowing look and said, "Well, congratulations, Nate. You're finally learning to care for your precious wife."
Nathaniel tightened his grip on Mavis's waist, saying, "My darling Mae hasn't eaten yet. Stop holding us up, will you? What if she faints from hunger?"
Nathaniel always referred to her in endearing terms in front of the Nicholls family.
Even though Mavis knew it was all an act to appease the Nicholls family, she could not help but feel a bit moved.
At least for that moment, she felt like his real wife.
"Fine, fine, I won't keep you from feeding Mae. Is that better? Just remember, public display of affection is embarrassing!"
