Aside from Elliot, Nathaniel, Lionel, and Nancy were all watching Sheena, waiting for her response.
Sheena continued to shell the peas, lowering her eyes and not answering immediately.
Nancy chuckled, trying to lighten the mood.
"Both young men are so handsome, it's hard to choose. If it were me, I'd want both."
Her attempt to ease the tension fell flat.
The three men did not share her humor, and what was supposedly a joke to her was a serious matter to them.
Realizing this, Nancy awkwardly stopped laughing and fell silent.
Under their expectant gazes, Sheena pouted in annoyance.
"I'm not choosing. I don't even know him. Why should I pick him as my husband?"
It felt like something snapped in Elliot's heart, and the pain was unbearable.
He gulped hard, tasting the bitterness in his mouth.
It was so painful that it made his nose tingle, and he had to lower his gaze to suppress his emotions.
Lionel turned grim, staying close to Elliot.
He noticed how Elliot's face paled instantly and felt a pang of sympathy for him.
Nathaniel's expression was not any better.
He had guessed correctly that the current Sheena would not choose Elliot.
However, he was not happy about the situation.
Even after days of earnest efforts from Nathaniel to win her trust, she still did not choose him over a stranger like Elliot.
The three men stood in the yard like statues, their backs stiff.
Unable to bear the awkwardness, Nancy brought out a few stools for them to sit on.
Then, she asked Nathaniel, "Are your guests staying for dinner? It's getting late, and it gets dark quickly in the mountains. They might have to stay the night, but…"
Nancy also smiled, and the atmosphere finally eased a bit.
However, people would rarely share the same emotions.
Elliot's gaze had not left Sheena since he arrived.
Seeing him in such distress, Sheena seemed utterly unfazed.
Did she really… not remember him?
How did this happen?
Elliot's eyes lowered from Sheena's face to her delicate fingers shelling the peas.
The familiar red diamond ring was on her left finger, and a flicker of hope sparked in his eyes.
Taking a few steps forward, he knelt before Sheena.
His voice trembled as he asked, "Do you really… not remember me?"
