Nathaniel teased, "Are you implying that it's my fault for not announcing your identity at the Nicholls residence sooner, calling you my personal servant, and allowing you to be bullied by Aishah and her crew?"
"No… I didn't mean that…"
Nathaniel chuckled softly, his eyes gleaming mischievously.
"You hesitated."
"I really didn't," Mavis insisted, frustrated.
"The more you deny, the guiltier you seem."
Mavis simply stayed quiet, silently sulking.
With her blond hair and blue eyes, she looked like a delicate doll.
She was obviously unhappy, and even her cheeks were slightly puffed up from the anger.
Nathaniel thought she actually looked rather adorable, and he could not help but chuckle.
He had not realized how amusing Mavis could be.
It turned out it was pretty fun to have a wife that he could tease at any time, and she even appeared quite charming when she was angry yet dared not act on it.
Nathaniel looked up, and his gaze inadvertently landed on Mavis's soft lips.
Lately, he could not help but notice how much more appealing she seemed, growing more delicate and beautiful with each glance.
Unconsciously, he leaned closer to Mavis, nearing her lips.
Perhaps having this interesting "trophy wife" at home was not such a bad idea.
If Mavis could just stay this obedient, he would even consider renewing their contract after a year.
For the first time, he entertained the idea as he moved closer to Mavis.
…
With Nathaniel so close, Mavis could feel his gentle, warm breath against her skin.
"I'm just looking out for your safety."
Then, he teased, "But how long do you plan to sit on my lap?"
Mavis suddenly realized her position and quickly sprang away, apologizing, "Sorry!"
Nathaniel was left speechless, thinking her reaction was too exaggerated.
He glanced down at his legs, still feeling the warmth from where Mavis had been sitting.
She had quite… the figure.
"Um…" Mavis fidgeted nervously, picking at her fingers. "I just came up to bring you the juice and thank you. I've said what I needed to, so I won't disturb you while you're working."
"Alright," Nathaniel replied casually.
Mavis turned and hurried away, her face burning with embarrassment.
The door to the study closed behind her once again.
