Mavis clutched her marriage certificate tightly in her hand as she awkwardly explained, "I have quite a lot of things. Even though they're not worth much, they're precious to me and important. I'm afraid bodyguards might mishandle them, so I'd feel more at ease if I packed them myself."
"Suit yourself, but don't wander off. The Nicholls family's driver will pick you up for the apartment in twenty minutes at the latest. Stay here," Nathaniel replied.
Mavis thought she could have taken the bus herself; there was no need to bother the driver.
After all, she was just Nathaniel's wife for a year, and she would return to being no one after their divorce.
Mavis did not feel deserving of these privileges, but under Nathaniel's intimidating presence, she did not object and simply nodded.
Nathaniel left swiftly, driving away his luxury car without a second glance or a hint of hesitation.
Mavis sighed, comforting herself as she mumbled, "At least he took the marriage certificate with him. I should be grateful."
She lovingly caressed the marriage certificate and tucked it into her bag.
Suddenly, her phone rang.
It was an international call from overseas.
At a glance, she could tell the number belonged to her father, Khalid Olsen.
Mavis hesitated for a moment but ultimately answered.
"Damn it, Mavis! Who is that man? He actually had someone abduct your mom! He wanted nothing else but your official document. Did you provoke him? If I catch him, I'll beat him to a pulp!"
Khalid's voice was earsplitting.
Thankfully, Mavis held the phone a little farther away to avoid damaging her ears.
He was speaking in Harbor City's local dialect, the Ryshrian language.
Mavis shook her head, feeling helpless.
She patiently replied in Ryshrian, "Dad, you probably can't beat him, and besides, I'm married. He had someone retrieve the documents from you to register our marriage."
"Huh?"
There were exclamations from multiple people on the other end of the line.
Soon, Mavis could hear noisy chatter.
"There's no wedding gift or wedding ceremony. It's a secret marriage, and... it's only for a year. After a year, we'll divorce, and I'll return home alone. As for the relatives on our side of the family, just tell them I'm still working in Froania."
"What?!"
Everyone on the other end of the call exclaimed, and the phone suddenly emitted a buzzing sound.
Mavis bit her lip, preparing herself for a torrent of scolding.
After a full minute of silence, someone finally spoke up.
However, Mavis was surprised to hear that her mother, Gracie, answered the call.
Gracie's voice was gentle, and she was obviously concerned as she asked, "Did you offend someone or borrow money and can't repay it, needing to sell yourself to pay the debt? Mavis, we don't do that kind of thing. The people in our hometown are simple, and divorce isn't common. You should quickly check if you can return that marriage certificate. It's only ten minutes old, so it shouldn't be a problem."
After a moment's pause, she continued, "If it's about money, we'll pay it off for you. Although we don't have much, you've sent quite a bit home over the years, and I've been saving it for you. If you've offended someone, try escaping or report it to the authorities. If all else fails, send us your address, and your dad and I, even if we have to bring the whole village, will rescue you!"
Gracie's voice was both anxious and worried, without a trace of blame.
Mavis felt her eyes welling up with tears.
