Charlene nodded. "I'm heading out. When Jasmine wakes up, remember to tell her."

Thorne looked at her. "All right. Won't you stay for breakfast?"

"No."

Thorne didn't push the issue. He stood up. "I'll walk you out."

"Don't bother."

Thorne didn't say another word, but he followed close behind her anyway, escorting her all the way to the door. He waited until her car completely pulled out of the driveway before finally turning back inside.

About ten minutes later, Jasmine woke up. As she came downstairs, she glanced around the room. Thorne said, "Your mom had some things to take care of, so she left early."

"Oh..."

The moment she woke up and didn't see Charlene by her side, Jasmine had already guessed as much.

She pressed her small lips together and headed into the dining room in total silence.

Thorne sat down beside her and reached out to check her forehead. "Your fever is completely gone. Does it hurt anywhere else? If you're tired, you can stay home today and go back to school tomorrow."

Jasmine didn't look up, nor did she swat his hand away. She simply replied, "No need. I want to go to school."

"All right." After a brief pause, he added, "I have to leave on another business trip soon, and it'll be a long time before I'm back. If you feel bored, make sure to keep in touch with your mom."

"I know."

In the two days following the official start of the trial, Vesta had been incredibly overwhelmed with work. She hadn't reached out to Thorne during that time. Now that things were finally settling down, she had a moment to contact him again.
