The call connected almost immediately.
Lucas sounded swamped on the other end. "Mr. Cooper, what can I do for you?"
Linton lowered his gaze, his handsome, sharp features an unreadable mask. "The matter I asked you to look into—what have you found?"
This was precisely what had been keeping Lucas so busy.
He frowned, his voice tinged with exhaustion. "Mr. Cooper, I've made some headway."
"It seems your father... Damian Cooper... spent years abroad building his own criminal empire. About five years ago, he began extending his operations back into this country."
"The Nightfall brothers' companies were all fronts set up under his orders, primarily for money laundering."
Linton’s face instantly darkened. He narrowed his deep, dangerous eyes and said coldly, "Are you telling me that the plot to murder Matthew was actually Damian Cooper's idea?"
Lucas paused for a moment before nodding, his expression complex. He reported, "Isabella was just a pawn at the lowest level. The Nightfall brothers were acting on your grandfather's orders to kill by proxy."
"Mr. Cooper, it seems your grandfather's goal... was likely to absorb the Grayson family's assets, making the Cooper family the sole dominant power in Crownport."
Linton let out a scornful laugh. The sheer absurdity of it all struck him.
It was a classic case of insatiable greed.
The desires of man, it seemed, were a bottomless pit that could never be filled.
Despite already possessing wealth and status beyond the wildest dreams of ordinary people, it still wasn't enough. The hunger for more drove them to break the law, to commit heinous crimes.
Linton slowly lowered his eyes, a wave of self-disgust washing over him.
He carried Damian Cooper's blood, and that lineage made him feel physically ill, as if he wanted to tear himself open and scrub his insides clean.
But bloodlines were inherited at birth. He couldn't choose his origins, nor could he choose his parents.
