They Want Me Back When It's Too Late (Jessica and Brian) novel Chapter 39

Jessica swallowed hard, fighting the surge of emotion. She shook her head over and over, unable to speak tears streamed lently down her cheeks

Dereck, still trying to act tough, flared up. “So that brat did hurt you, hah

Jessica sniffled and replied. “It’s not that. I brought it on myself”

Dereck stared at Jessica, his heart already marking Brian down with a big red X.

Stella had meant to give them some space and let them talk in peace. But when she heard Jessica sobbing nonstop, she couldn’t take it anymore. She rushed in and pulled Stella into a hug.

“Enough, she’s home, and that’s all that matters. Why are you giving her a hard time? Stella shot a glare at Dereck

She complained in her mind. You’ve been missing her every day for seven years. Now she’s finally home, and you’re still putting on a show? If you scare her off again, don’t come crying to me.

Dereck looked utterly wronged. He thought, I didn’t even say anything. This is all Brian’s fault.

Stella asked in a gentle tone, “What do you wanna eat tonight, Jessi? I told Maria to make a few of your favorites. If there’s something else you want, just let me know.”

Jessica smiled through her tears. “Nothing else. I’ve missed Maria’s cooking for years.”

With Stella chatting beside them, the years of tension between Jessica and Dereck started to melt away.

“Jessi, about the boy…” Stella cautiously asked.

She figured that their family had their ways. If it came down to it, she’d do whatever it took to get Jacob’s custody back.

“Mom, Jacob…” Jessica understood her mother’s concern before she even finished the sentence.

In the past, she never imagined divorcing Brian. She never thought she’d walk away from Jacob’s life.

But the fact was that Jacob pushed her away first. Besides, once the thought of divorce took root, Jessica never considered taking Jacob with her.

“I didn’t raise him properly,” Jessica said flatly. “He doesn’t want me to be his mother. And…

She paused, gave her parents a faint smile, and added. “He’s got a nasty temper. I don’t want him anymore.

Stella and Dereck both fell heavy–hearted. They didn’t press her, but it was clear Brian had something to do with it.
