Jacob had been eagerly hoping to see Jessica. Now that she wasn’t going to visit, and on top of that, asking her mother to choose the gift, he would surely be hurt if he found out.

Stella cared deeply for her grandson and didn’t want to see him disappointed.

“Alright,” she said. “Let’s go shopping later and pick out the gift while we’re at it.”

Jessica agreed without hesitation. In truth, she had already settled on the perfect gift the moment her mother mentioned Jacob’s upcoming discharge.

“Sounds good,” Stella said.

After they finished eating, she accompanied Jessica to the nearest shopping mall.

The next morning, as Jessica opened the door to leave for work, she was once again stopped by Brian.

“You’re not supposed to be at the hospital right now?” he asked, holding a breakfast bag in his hand.

Jessica frowned slightly. Just yesterday, Stella had said she was going with Brian to pick Jacob up.

“I came to pick you up,” Brian said gently, his eyes soft as they rested on her. “Jake’s been asking for you.”

He noticed how much thinner she had grown, thinking, ‘Is this pregnancy really hitting you that hard, Jessi?‘

Jessica shot him a sharp look. “I already told you, I’m not going. Didn’t my mom inform you?”

Brian nodded. “She did, but I thought I’d try one more time, just in case you’ve changed your mind.”

“You’re imagining things.” Jessica rolled her eyes and stepped around him, starting to walk away.

Brian followed her, carrying the breakfast, talking about Jacob’s recent health and how he was doing at school.

Gradually, Jessica’s irritation softened, and her urge to push him away diminished.

He stayed by her side all the way until she got into her car.

“Who said you could get in?” Jessica blurted, surprised to find Brian already sitting in the passenger seat.

She didn’t understand how she had let this man get so entangled in her life again without even realizing it.

A shiver ran through her as she confronted her own conflicting feelings. She was starting to get used to Brian’s presence once more.

No, this is wrong,‘ she thought fiercely.

The more she dwelled on it, the more unsettled she became.

She had made up her mind to keep her distance from Brian and Jacob, refusing to be drawn back in by a few kind gestures.

‘Jessica, haven’t you learned your lesson from three months ago?‘ her inner voice warned.

Brian noticed her sudden pallor and his eyes filled with worry.

“Jessi, what’s wrong?” he asked quietly, already preparing himself to carry her to the hospital if she didn’t answer.

“Get lost!” Jessica snapped, turning her head and grabbing his arm, pushing him out of the car with surprising force.

“Get out. Stay away from my car. I don’t want to see you. Just go!” she shouted, her voice trembling with anger.

Brian was bewildered but didn’t resist. He carefully stepped out, not wanting to upset her further.

“All right, I’m leaving. Jessi, please calm down,” he said as he pulled a portable oxygen canister from his bag and handed it to her.

“Feeling unwell? Take a breath of oxygen first.”

Jessica brushed his hand away fiercely.
