Brian fell silent. Just as Jessica thought she’d finally silenced him, he murmured in a low voice, “I’ll stay quiet. Just pretend I’m not here.”

Jessica rubbed her forehead. “You just can’t leave me alone, can you?”

If she’d known this would happen, she wouldn’t have called him out. What a pain.

Brian avoided a direct answer and simply murmured, “I just can’t rest easy.”

He hadn’t intended to show himself, but now that she’d found out, there was no need for him to force himself to stay hidden.

Jessica took a deep breath and pointed to the door. “Get out,” she said firmly. “I need to sleep.”

Brian hesitated. “But-”

“If I need anything, I’ll call someone for help,” Jessica stated coldly.

As for who that ‘someone‘ might be, there was no right answer.

Brian seemed satisfied with that small concession. He nodded as he stood up and said, “I’ll be right outside the door. If you feel unwell, just tap the bed

frame. I’ll hear you.”

Jessica turned her head away, refusing to acknowledge him. Only when the door clicked shut did she finally look back; her empty gaze fixed on the now-

closed door.

‘Is Brian really planning to stand guard outside all night?‘ Jessica wondered.

It wasn’t that cold tonight. He probably wouldn’t catch a chill.

But honestly, whether he caught a cold or not shouldn’t be her business.

Jessica thought irritably, yanking the covers over her head in frustration. To her surprise, she actually drifted off almost immediately.

She slept soundly through the night.

The next morning, Jessica ate the breakfast Stella had brought. From the very first taste, she knew it was Brian who had cooked it, but she chose not to say a word.

Brian was peeling fruit nearby. When he saw Jessica finish her food, he immediately handed her a bite–sized piece of fruit.

Jessica took it without hesitation. Stella watched, so many questions swirling in her mind, but in the end, she said nothing.

A little while later, Dereck arrived with Jacob in tow.

Jacob struggled to carry an oversized fruit basket; every piece inside was Jessica’s favorite.

“Good morning, Mommy, Daddy, and Grandma.”

Jacob obediently greeted everyone, set down the farge fruit basket, and quietly retreated to a corner.

Jessica tried hard to ignore him, but ultimately failed. With a sigh, she asked, “Who told you I was here? Your dad?”

As she spoke, she shot Brian an accusatory glare.

“Brian, I’ve told you before. Don’t drag our child into our adult conflicts!”

“No, Mommy, don’t be angry! Daddy didn’t tell me. Grandpa did. If…if you don’t want to see me, I’ll leave right now.

Noticing Jessica’s anger, Jacob hurriedly explained, then immediately turned to bolt away.

“Come back,” Jessica snapped.

She was speechless.

‘Do I really look that heartless?‘ she thought. Her son had brought her a huge fruit basket, and yet she’d scared him off before he’d even been here a minute. What would people think of her if word got out?,

“Oh, okay, Mommy!”

Jacob obediently scampered back and eagerly picked up Jessica’s cup.
