Chapter 172
But just as Jessica stepped outside, Madeline’s pleading voice rang out behind her, “Jessi, I’m begging you, don’t fight me for Brian, okay? He’s all have I’m not like you; you have loving parents, the entire Grant Group…”
Madeline’s voice was teary and desperate, as if she were begging Jessica to spare her a way to survive.
Jessica paused for a second, then walked away without turning back.
A few steps later, she covered her mouth. Her stomach, seemingly affected by emotion, was suddenly and violently hit by morning sickness.
Madeline watched Jessica’s retreating figure as she hurried away, almost like fleeing.
She wiped away her crocodile tears, a cold, unyielding resolve flashing in her eyes.
Jessica rushed into the bathroom and vomited violently, retching until her stomach was completely empty.
Still pale–faced, she returned to her office when her phone buzzed. It was a voice message from Jacob.
She didn’t feel like listening, but then she recalled how Jacob had been sending pastries to Grant Manor for days.
She remembered that night. It was so late already, yet he’d shown up at her door, beaming with excitement, holding out the food he’d brought just for
her.
Jessica closed her eyes briefly to compose herself, then tapped to play the message. Jacob’s slightly hesitant voice came through.
“Mommy, did you eat the pastries I asked Maddie to bring you? If you liked them, I can buy them for you every day. I still have lots of pocket money saved up.”
The intensity in Jessica’s eyes softened a little.
Jacob did know she was allergic to nuts, but she wasn’t sure whether he remembered.
Madeline was definitely up to no good, maybe even trying to drive a wedge between her and her son.
Jessica felt a little better, but she still couldn’t forget the hurt Jacob had caused her.
Ten minutes later.
Madeline came to the CEO’s office at Atkinson Group.
She walked in shyly with documents, pretending to be afraid of Brian noticing her appearance. Her actions successfully caught his attention.
“Madeline, what happened to your face?” he asked.
Jessica’s slap had been triggered by reflex, almost using her full strength.
Madeline’s cheek was red and swollen, with distinct handprints. She’d even tried covering it with makeup so it wouldn’t look too obvious.
But it was still clear at a glance that the red mark was from a slap.
Madeline’s eyes welled with tears, and a trace of grievance flashed through them. She shook her head, choking up pitifully. “It’s nothing, I–I just bur into something…”
Brian’s face darkened. Who could bump into something and end up with hand–shaped bruises?
His voice dropped, cold and commanding. “Who hit you?” Someone actually dared lay a hand on his secretary.
