Chapter 170
“Just a moment, let me call Jessi.” Madeline turned away and made two more calls, but no one picked up.
Suppressing the malice in her eyes, she sent a text: [Jessi, I’m downstairs at your company. Are you really going to ignore my calls and refuse to see me?]
On the twenty–eighth floor, Jessica’s eyes betrayed a flash of disgust–directed at both Madeline and herself.
Her most vivid memory of Madeline was from years ago when she came to interview at Atkinson Group.
Back then, Madeline was painfully thin. Though a grown woman, she looked malnourished with her sallow complexion. Jessica remembered how she’d introduced herself with a mixture of timidity and forced courage.
Madeline had said if she couldn’t find a job, her father would drag her back to their hometown and marry her off.
Jessica had felt sorry for her then and made an exception to hire Madeline despite company policy.
When Jessica took her under her wing, Madeline had been incredibly cautious and grateful about her kindness. She’d said it was the first time in her life anyone had been so good to her.
Madeline had also claimed Jessica was the best person in the world for her. Thinking about what happened later, Jessica let out a sneer.
The desk phone rang. Jessica picked it up and said, “Take her to the conference room on the twentieth floor.”
Jessica stared out the window as her mind drifted back five years. Madeline had been so innocent then, like a fledgling bird depending on her. Jessica had taught her everything, step by step.
When Jessica snapped back to reality, more than ten minutes had passed.
She had no idea what Madeline wanted from her now. Deep down, Jessica didn’t want to see Madeline at all. She didn’t want any contact with her whatsoever.
Jessica couldn’t lie to herself. She had been blind to the danger of letting the wolf into her home, and now she was facing the consequences.
Jessica pushed open the door to the conference room on the twentieth floor. Madeline immediately jumped up from her seat with a bright smile plastered on her face.
“Jessi! Long time no see! I’ve missed you so much!” Madeline gushed. “You have no idea how much I’ve been thinking about you. Every time I look at certain things, I just can’t help but think of you.”
The way Madeline emphasized “certain things” made it clear she was hinting at something specific. Jessica knew exactly what those “things” were.
Jessica kept her expression cold and distant. Whenever Madeline turned on the charm like this, Jessica felt nothing but contempt.
Every encounter with Madeline reminded Jessica that the years of genuine friendship she’d invested had been worthless. She would have been better off throwing her affection at actual animals than wasting it on Madeline.
“What do you want?” Jessica asked flatly.
“Jessi, let’s sit down and talk properly,” Madeline suggested sweetly. She reached out to take Jessica’s hand in a gesture of fake intimacy, but Jessica yanked her arm away forcefully.
Jessica’s eyes glowered coldly. “Madeline, I don’t think we have anything to discuss.”
Chapter 170
*Come on, Jessi, don’t be mad,” Madeline said with a coy smile, covering her mouth in an exaggerated gesture. “My relationship with Brian–I mean, Mr. Atkinson–isn’t what you think at all.”
