“But there’s so much food here. It’ll go to waste if I eat alone,” Sana said, sounding disappointed. She really wanted Jessica to try her mom’s cooking.
Jessica pretended not to hear. She was already full anyway–Brian had sent plenty of food.
Gabriela must have gone out for lunch. The office was empty.
Jessica wandered around for a bit before returning to her office. Several colored illustrations lay on the drawing board.
The strong color contrasts immediately caught the eye, drawing viewers in for a closer look.
Jessica examined each piece carefully. Following the concepts and design briefs she’d provided, Sana’s fundamental skills were solid. Jessica picked up
her brush and refined some minor details.
“Jessi, you’re here so early! Take a break before diving into work,” Gabriela said, walking in with a cup of coffee. Seeing Jessica already doing touch–ups,
she set down her coffee and pressed Jessica into a chair.
“It’s fine. I rested while I was eating.” Jessica’s face brightened with a smile when she saw Gabriela.
Noticing Gabriela’s concerned look, Jessica added, “I know my own body. I’m not tired.”
Gabriela had objected when Jessica mentioned working late tonight. But she knew Jessica’s stubborn nature–there was no talking her out of it.
“By the way, this Central Plaza illustration needs to be scrapped. The colors are too chaotic, and the layering is all over the place. It’s stealing focus from the main subject,” Jessica said.
She had designed this piece herself, including the color scheme. The decision to scrap it had nothing to do with Sana.
Jessica hadn’t worked on this type of themed illustration in years. The spatial composition and colors were off, and Jessica wasn’t satisfied with it.
Gabriela fell silent. She had to admit the painting’s colors were way too overpowering, drowning out the plaza’s natural beauty. Still, it wasn’t terrible.
But the piece was for an exhibition. Jessica had every right to be strict about it.
“I’ll work late tonight and redesign this whole theme from scratch,” Jessica said.
“Alright.” Gabriela gave Jessica’s shoulder a gentle pat. “Don’t push yourself too hard.” With that, she headed back to her own office to tackle her
workload.
When Sana finished dinner and came back to the office, she immediately noticed one painting missing from the easel. Her heart skipped a beat, worried that she’d messed up the coloring somehow. “Jessi, that Central Plaza piece, did 1-”
“It wasn’t your fault.” Jessica looked up from her work. “The design itself needs work. I’m going to redo it from scratch, so I’ll need you to color it again once I’m done.”
“Oh, no problem at all! You’re the one working hard here, Jessi.” Sana waved her hand dismissively.
With the sketches and coloring guidelines already laid out, Sana barely had to think about her work. She’d actually loved that Central Plaza piece–the vibrant, diverse colors made it feel so alive. She couldn’t believe Jessica wasn’t satisfied with it.
Sana sighed inwardly. ‘Is this what separates the masters from the rest of us?‘
Jessica stayed buried in her sketches until ten/thirty, when Stella’s phone call finally pulled her back to reality. She packed up her things and headed to
