Chapter 140
There was no way Jessica could sneak out to the office now. Might as well catch up on some sleep.
Meanwhile, at Arkinson Villa, things were getting interesting in the kitchen.
“Mr. Atkinson, you need to heat the oil first before adding the vegetables Carefull Quick, run it under the tap Madeline grabbed Brian’s hand and pullard
it under the running water, cradling his in both of hers. Her hands looked especially delicate next to his.
Brian frowned, but it was unclear if it was due to Madeline’s intimate gestion or the oil that splattered on him.
A visible blister had formed on the back of his hand where hot water had dripped while he was adding ingredients to the pan.
“It’s nothing” The pain already fading, Brian pulled his hand away and poured out the smoking oil from the wok before adding fresh off
He’d been learning a couple of new dishes on Madeline’s suggestion, worried that Jessica might be getting tired of eating porridge all the time.
Madeline could still feel the warmth lingering in her palm as she turned to dig through the first aid kit for burn ointment.
She’d come to Atkinson Villa early this morning and learned that Jacob had gone to Jessica’s place.
At first, Madeline had felt angry, but then she’d found Brian practicing his cooking in the kitchen. Sylvie had left early to buy groceries, leaving just the two of them alone in the massive villa.
Madeline’s heart swelled with sweetness. Part of her ached watching Brian push himself so hard for Jessica’s sake, but another part rejoiced at having this rare chance to be alone with him.
“Mr. Atkinson, you should put some burn cream on that first. It’ll scar otherwise.” Madeline approached and naturally took Brian’s hand, pulling it toward
her.
Looking at the multiple wounds on his hand, her eyes darkened slightly as she squeezed out some ointment onto the blister
She was about to spread the cream when Brian pulled his hand back. “Thank you, I’ll do it myself.” He pressed down with his finger, bursting the blister The sharp pain made him wince.
“Oh, that must hurt so much.” Madeline leaned forward as if to blow on Brian’s hand.
Brian lowered his le hand and said, “Madeline, Jake’s not home today. You should go back and get some rest,”
“So he wants me to leave?” Madeline’s face stiffened for a moment before she asked hesitantly, “What about the dishes for Jessi?”
Brian said, “I’m not cooking today.”
“Oh, alright then” Madeline forced a smile and turned to wash her hands, lingering for another ten or fifteen minutes before finally leaving
During this time, Brian studied the recipe book Jessica had left behind
Brian shook his hand as the burn throbbed painfully. Only after applying some ointment did it feel slightly better
He wondered if Jessica had burned herself before too, just never letting him know.
“Mommy, have some strawberries.” Not long after dinner, Jacob knocked on the bedroom door with a plate of strawberries.
The bedroom door wasn’t fully closed. When Jacob knocked, it swung open. Without waiting for Jessica to speak, Jacob’s eyes lit up, and he entered
