Chapter 116
Chapter 116
“Maddie…” Jacob’s choked voice showed that he had been crying. “I saw Mom at the mall just now.”
Madeline frowned and instinctively suspected that Jessica had deliberately run into Jacob at the mall. “Did Jessica see you?”
“Yeah,” Jacob’s tears that he had just held back welled up again. “I called her, but she ignored me.”
Madeline smiled silently after hearing that.
“Mom has a new baby. She won’t love me anymore. She’ll love the new baby instead. Maddie, my mom doesn’t love me anymore…” Jacob started crying.
Madeline almost laughed out loud, but she pretended to be sad and said, “Jake, don’t cry. My heart breaks when you cry. Jessica may not love you, but i
will.”
Jacob cried for a while. Maybe out of pique, he then said, “I still have you loving me, Maddie…” Madeline felt even more proud and secretly hinted that no matter what, she liked Jacob the most.
Jacob stopped crying after being coaxed by her. “Maddie, can you take me to the mall to buy those flute–shaped pens?”
He remembered that the aunt beside Jessica had bought flute–shaped pens for Jessica’s new baby.
Madeline quickly said, “Of course. I’ll buy you whatever you want.”
If a few cheap pens could win Jacob’s heart, it was really a worthwhile deal.
Jacob said, “Thank you. You’re the best.”
After hanging up the phone, Madeline went back to the office.
Brian looked up at her. Madeline deliberately didn’t touch up her makeup and forced out two tears. At first glance, Brian could tell that Madeline had secretly cried.
He frowned. The person on the phone with her was Jacob, so Brian didn’t understand why Madeline was crying.
He asked, “What’s wrong? What did Jake say on the phone?”
“It’s nothing. Jake…” Madeline choked up and hesitated. Seeing Brian’s expression change, she said, “Jake said he saw Jessica at the mall, but Jessica refused to talk to him. He also said that she didn’t want him anymore since she had a new baby.”
Madeline was smart, and so was Brian: So she knew very well what not to say.
Most of the time, Madeline would rather say only half of what she wanted to say and let Brian guess the rest, rather than exaggerate and risk having her lies exposed.
She just repeated what Jacob had said. Even if Brian went back and asked, he would only think that Jessica had done something to make Jac this way.
Brian was unhappy with Jessica’s behavior, but he also knew that Jessica was affected by pregnancy hormones, and that was why she was cold to Jacob.
He had asked Janice about this. Janice said that it was probably because the fetus felt insecure due to the influence of pregnancy hormones, so Jessica repulsed her previous child.
Brian believed it and thought that before the baby was born, Jacob would have to endure some grievances.
