The Year I Was the Other Woman To Myself novel Chapter 119

The moment Rebecca mentioned trying on a dress, Mrs. Sullivan sensed her ulterior motive and her face soured. “Rebecca, you’re not the one getting married. Why would you try on a wedding dress?”

Rebecca lowered her head, murmuring, “I’m just afraid I’ll never get the chance. I wanted to see what it felt like, just for today.”

Her words were so pitiful that anyone would have felt a pang of sympathy. Penelope certainly did. She took Rebecca’s hand. “Why would you never get a chance to wear a wedding dress? The man you marry someday won’t be so poor he can’t even afford to buy you one, will he?”

“No, no, that’s not what I meant,” Rebecca said quickly.

“Right, Mrs. Sullivan?” Penelope turned to the older woman.

Mrs. Sullivan had no intention of ever giving Rebecca a wedding, which naturally meant no wedding dress. But Penelope’s direct question put her on the spot, making her feel like a villain caught in the act. “Ahem, fine. Try one on if you want. It’s not like it costs anything.”

Rebecca’s face lit up, and she hurried off to pick a dress. In truth, she already had one in mind.

“I want to try this one!” she declared, pointing to another gown on a display platform, a magnificent royal-style dress.

The consultant smiled apologetically. “I’m sorry, that’s one of our haute couture pieces. It’s not available for try-ons.”

Rebecca frowned. “She just tried one on. Why can’t I?”

The consultant knew there were things she couldn’t say, so she simply repeated her apologies.

“Are you discriminating against me? I want to file a complaint!”

“You are welcome to do so, but I truly cannot let you try on this gown.”

Mrs. Sullivan, fearing Rebecca would pick an expensive dress and demand they buy it, followed her over. “A dress that costs millions? Do you have that kind of money?”

“I…” Rebecca’s face fell.

“Give her one from the sales rack,” Mrs. Sullivan commanded.

Under pressure, Rebecca reluctantly chose a dress from the sale section.

Just as Zebulon emerged in his suit, Rebecca came out in her wedding dress. When they stood next to each other, he frowned while her eyes filled with tears.
