A low chuckle came from the other end of the line, Gian’s voice still light. “Don’t worry, it won’t be a problem for me. I’m not seeing anyone right now and have no plans to get married, so this is actually a perfect way to fend off the pressure from my family. It’s a win-win for both of us.” He paused before adding, “Helping you out is a lot less trouble than dealing with all those blind dates they try to set me up with.”
Hearing this, the knot of anxiety in Danielle’s chest finally loosened. She clutched her phone, her voice filled with gratitude. “Thank you, Gian. So, should we discuss the details when you get to Nexus Prime?”
“No problem,” Gian agreed readily. “My flight gets in tomorrow morning, around eleven. I’ll come straight to you, so don’t worry about picking me up.”
“I should still come get you,” Danielle insisted. “The station at Nexus Prime is a maze, and I know the way around.”
After a few more words to confirm the time and place, they hung up. Danielle set her phone down and gazed out the window at the darkening sky. The anxiety that had been churning inside her began to dissolve, replaced by a sense of reassurance. She hadn’t expected Gian to agree so readily, let alone be so thoughtful about it. But then again, he’d always been a perceptive and considerate person.
The next morning, Danielle left half an hour early, taking Niki with her to Nexus Prime Airport. The terminal was bustling with travelers. Holding Niki’s hand tightly, Danielle found a conspicuous spot near the arrivals gate, her eyes occasionally flicking up to the flight information screen.
“Mommy, are we here to pick up uncle Gian?” Niki asked, her little face tilted up in anticipation. Spending an afternoon building blocks with him had left a deep impression on her.
Danielle smiled and patted her head. “That’s right. uncle Gian is coming to visit. Are you happy, Niki?”
